Timing of New Pulsars Recently Discovered by PALFA

We request a total of 28.5 hours over the course of a year (19.5 in the Fall, 9 in the Spring) to derive precision timing solutions for 6 pulsars discovered in the PALFA survey in the last 6 months, in order to determine spin and binary parameters, and hence fundamental properties such as ages, magnetic fields, and spin-down luminosities. Two of the pulsars are binary millisecond pulsars, each with particular science potential, two are transient emitters (RRATs)and two are ordinary pulsars vital for population and Galactic studies. Outreach Abstract: Pulsars, the rapidly rotating, highly magnetized, ultra-dense remnants of massive stars, are neutron stars that can be used as extremely stable astronomical clocks. This pro ject will observe 6 such stars, situated thousands of light-years away, that were recently discovered by the ALFA pulsar survey. These observations will permit us to account for our target pulsars' every rotation (up to hundreds per second). The exceptionally precise models to be derived will allow us to estimate the pulsars' basic parameters, such as their ages, magnetic field strengths and in some cases orbital parameters. Our models might allow us to use some of these ob jects as celestial laboratories to test Einstein' s theory of General Relativity as well as study nuclear physics. The pulsars will also help us study the structure of the Milky Way, how stars evolve and die, and the population of neutron stars as a whole.
