Proposal Title: Radar Imaging of Asteroids 46 Hestia, 109 Felicitas, and 20 Massalia in 2002
ABSTRACT:
We propose delay-Doppler radar imaging of main-belt asteroids 46 Hestia, 109 Felicitas, and 20 Massalia in order
to derive otherwise unavailable information about sizes, shapes, topography, small-scale morphology, and
near-surface bulk density. Hestia is one of the few primitive (P-class) bodies which can produce echoes strong
enough for imaging; even more interesting is the fact that its optical lightcurve suggests a binary asteroid. Twelve
nights of observing should enable us to test the binary hypothesis and to obtain coarse-resolution shape
information. During the last ve of these nights we propose to observe Felicitas as well, since these two targets
share the same observing window. Massalia is the largest member of a "crater-like" family and hence might have a
large concavity or inhomogeneous regolith properties. Seven nights of data will enable us to look for such features
via the construction of a 3-D shape model with 10-km resolution.
