Proposal Title: Multiple Radar Characterization of the Leonid Meteor Stream and Ionospheric
E ects: A Leonids Campaign Proposal for 1998/99.
ABSTRACT:
We propose to continue the successful systematic observations of the macro/micrometeor component of the Leonid
meteor shower and possible ionospheric e ects of the shower using the AO 47/430 MHz radar systems and a
user-supplied forward-scatter VHF passive meteor radar. As in 1997, the 430 MHz radar will be operated in both
ISR (10s/minute) and meteor modes (50s/minute) while for part of observing period the VHF radar will be used
continuously in meteor mode. The meteor observations will establish meteor uxes with the VHF radars sensitive
to larger meteors, the UHF radar sensitive to micrometeors, and the ISR mode used to monitor the content of
metal ions in Tidal Ion and Sporadic E layers. The various groups participating in the Leonids Campaign will share
all data. Several other radars including EISCAT and MU will be operating during this period as may Jicamarca.
