We propose using 6 hours of Arecibo time to measure the synchrotron contribution to the submillimeter (submm) emission of galaxies in the SCUBA Local Universe Galaxy Survey. The submm flux is used to compute the cold dust mass in these galaxies, which form a zero-redshift data point for models of galaxy evolution. However, the submm flux may not be solely due to dust but may also include CO (3-2) and continuum synchrotron emission. We will characterise the SED over 2-10 GHz at Arecibo, and will then be able to extrapolate the synchrotron emission to 0.85 mm. By determining the proportion of submm flux due to synchrotron over a number of galaxies, we will be able to find the effect of synchrotron emission on estimates of the dust mass in these galaxies and on the dust mass function derived from them.
