Proposal Type: Urgent
General Category: Planetary Radar
Observation Category: Solar System
Total Time Requested: 21 Hours
Proposal Title: Radar observations of the recently discovered near earth asteroid 2002 NY40.
ABSTRACT:
The recently discovered roughly 0.5 km sized NEA 2002 NY40 will approach within 0.004 AU of the earth on
August 18, 2002. It will be observable with Arecibo for several days around this date at distances down to 0.005
AU (twice the distance to the moon). This is an almost unprecedented opportunity for radar imaging of an NEA
with 8 m resolution in range and considerably less in Doppler. We are requesting telescope and S-band radar time
for 6 observations between August 16 and 20. We are also requesting Green Bank Telescope time under an existing
proposal, for bistatic echo reception for the 4 observations between Aug 16 and 19 when the round-trip-times will
be less than 15 sec. VLBA time is being requested for Aug 18 as a test of synthesis imaging of the NEA with about
20 m resolution and an attempt will probably be made to investigate the results from simple Arecibo/GBT two
station interferometry. If circumstances warrant we made also require the 430 MHz radar system.
