Radar Observations of Asteroid 2006 RZ

Recently-discovered asteroid 2006 RZ will be observable at Arecibo in early October, 2006, even with its current low power. We propose radar observations of this several-hundred-meter ob ject to determine its size, shape, and spin properties. Nothing but it's approximate size of 300m is known about this ob ject, but it is well-placed for spectroscopic visible and infrared observations over the next few weeks, and we expect that by the end of the observing campaign it will be well-observed at multiple wavelengths. We propose to observe this ob ject on two days near closest approach, Oct 7 and 8, and one day about a week earlier to get adequate aspect angle coverage, and to determine whether we need to attempt bistatic observations with the GBT at the time of closest approach.
