Proposal Title: Determining the z< 0.1 Baryon Budget
ABSTRACT:
Due to considerable uncertainty in the high end of the scale length distribution for low surface brightness galaxies,
the contribution of these galaxies to the baryon density in the local universe is currently a matter of debate.
Studies of intragalactic gas indicate at least 60% of the local baryons predicted by nucleosynthesis theories reside in
plasmas, while recent studies of the number density of galaxies indicate 70% of the local baryons reside in di use,
low surface brightness systems. Clearly something is wrong. To determine the validity of the second claim, that a
signi cant fraction of the predicted baryons lie in low surface brightness systems, we propose to perform a 21-cm
search for 60 previously undetected, yet presumably H I rich, galaxies in the z = 0.02 { 0.1 range to determine the
contribution of di use galaxies to the local luminosity function. As preliminary studies gave a 86% detection rate
with only 1 hour of telescope time/galaxy, we request 60 hours of observing time with the L-wide receiver, spread
over 2 { 3 observing sessions.
