Radar Imaging of Mainbelt Asteroids for Shape Reconstruction

The upgraded Arecib o telescop e is now sensitive enough to supp ort radar imaging and 3-D shap e reconstruction of the strongest mainb elt asteroid (MBA) radar targets. (Only seven MBAs have yielded radar images with at least ten indep endent pixels on the target, and a radar-derived 3-D shap e mo del has b een published for only one 216 Kleopatra). This is a prop osal to image five MBA candidates for shap e reconstruction: 21 Lutetia (a flyby target of the Rosetta Mission), 27 Euterp e, 49 Pales, 80 Sappho, and 128 Nemesis. Pales has not b een detected previously, and previous exp eriments on the other targets have pro duced total signal-to-noise ratios less than 18. Our prop osed observations should easily b e able to accumulate data sets with SNRs ranging from 60 to several hundred for each target.
