Undergraduate Student Observations of Galaxies and Galactic Star-forming Re-

gions
ABSTRACT:
We request observations of isolated galaxies and galactic star-forming regions, using the L-band and C-band receivers. Observations will be executed by undergraduate student observers as part of the Yale University course Astronomy 255 "Astrophysical Research Methods". This semester-long course is the foundation of the Yale Astronomy and Astrophysics ma jor. The course' s goal is to prepare students for professional research, covering data reduction methods, statistics and comparison to theoretical models. The class will study radio telescopes and observing techniques, and then travel to Arecibo during Fall break (Oct 21-23). Here we request 5 hours of observations so that different student teams (made of three or four students) can observe a unique source. Students will be responsible for the reduction of the data and will be involved in the full scientific process, from choosing targets to writing up their results.

RFI Considerations Frequency Ranges Planned
I request coordination with Punta Salinas and GPS below, in case it is possible to do so. We can still observe if it is not possible to coordinate with them on our desired dates. This proposal requires coordination with Punta Salinas radar within the band 1222-1381 MHz.. This proposal requires coordination with GPS L3 at 1381 MHz.
