Prop osal Title: Multifrequency observing of PSR J1023+0038: does the flickering involve activation as a radio pulsar? ABSTRACT:
PSR J1023+0038 is at a key stage of its evolution from low-mass X-ray binary to millisecond pulsar (MSP): accretion is ending and the MSP is turning on. This process involves episodes during which it develops an accretion disc and long times when it is active as a "redback", a gas-rich MSP. During its previous active episode in 2000/2001, the system was not known to be interesting, but since the end of June it has become active again. We have an intensive multiwavelength observing campaign planned around an XMM-Newton observation on 2013 November 1012, and we are requesting radio pulsar observations to provide simultaneous information on the system's activity or lack thereof as a radio MSP. Arecibo will provide unparalleled sensitivity to pulsations in short integrations and at high frequency.
