Low Frequency Electrostatic Emissions Excited by the Arecibo HF Facility

Stimulated electromagnetic emissions (SEE) are produced by high power electromagnetic (EM) pump waves in the ionosphere. The electromagnetic emissions are measured on the ground in the form of downshifted and upshifted sidebands from the pump wave frequency. The frequency offsets from the pump provide information such as electron temperature, ion composition, HF interaction altitude, electron acceleration though wave-particle resonances, and field-aligned irregularity (FAI) generation. NRL will bring digital receivers to the Arecibo Observatory to record the EM signals scattered from the ionosphere during F-Region and E-Region ionospheric modification experiments. Time is requested to control the HF pump modes for optimum SEE generation. The measurements of plasma properties with SEE will be compared with and validated by the incoherent scatter radar (ISR).
