Diurnal ISR and lidar observations of the mesopause/D-region

We propose to make full-diurnal observations of the mesopause/D-region of the atmosphere in order to begin to realize the synergy of simultaneous common-volume studies with both the incoherent-scatter radar and the daytime-capable potassium Doppler-resonance lidar. Daytime lidar observations of mesopause region K abundance and neutral temperature are just now being realized at Arecibo, a capability we will utilize to make unique measurements of the ionized and neutral components of the mesopause region between 85 and 95 km altitude. Simultaneous ion and neutral spectra will allow us to directly measure parameters of atmospheric stability, absolute density, and solar tidal forcing. Comparisons will be made with nocturnal lidar-airglow studies.
