Proposal Title: Radar Observations of Comet Encke in 2003
ABSTRACT:
We propose to make S-band radar observations of Comet 2P/Encke during the comet's November 2003 passage.
The approach distance of 0.26 AU is the closest for the next 40 years and a ords the best opportunity we will ever
have to observe Encke with the Arecibo radar. The closer approach distance and improved system sensitivity of the
upgraded system should give 25-times stronger echoes than for the rst detection of Encke in 1980. Using a
combination of CW and delay-Doppler observations, we will attempt to determine the size, shape, rotation period,
and radar albedo of the nucleus. We will also search for a broadband echo component from large ejected grains, a
result which would be of considerable interest from the standpoint of meteoroid production and infrared-trail
modeling.
