Radar Observations of Comet 103P/Hartley 2

We propose to make S-band radar observations of Comet 103P/Hartley 2 during its close Earth passage in October-November 2010. The ob jectives will be to estimate the nucleus properties (size, shape, spin, surface density) and to search for, and characterize, any population of large (>cm-size) ejected grains. The radar results are expected to complement and support the EPOXI spacecraft mission flyby in November and should enhance the overall scientific return from the Hartley 2 apparition.
