Radar Observations of Near-Earth Asteroids Feb - June 2011

As part of an ongoing effort to characterize Near-Earth asteroids, determine their sizes, shapes and spins, we propose to observe 20 ob jects visible at Arecibo between Feb and June 2011. About half of these will only be detected using continuuous-wave (CW) and will result in orbit improvement to prevent the ob ject being lost, and predict future planetary encounters. The other targets will be high enough signal-to-noise ratio to allow imaging. Our understanding of the population of Near-Earth asteroids is incomplete, and ground-based imaging of as many available targets as possible will greatly expand our knowledge of these bodies. Support of the Arecibo planetarly radar system from NASA is provided with the expectation that at least 300 hours per year are devoted to study of NEAs.
