Faint HI 21-cm Emission Line Wings at Forbidden Velocities

Large-scale (l,v) diagrams of HI 21-cm line emission in the Galactic plane show small high-velocity bumps protruding from their surroundings. Because those wing-like features are extended to the velocities forbidden by the Galactic rotation, they are called as Forbidden-Velocity Wings (FVWs). FVWs are interesting ob jects because they are the sites where dynamic Galactic events, e.g., supernova explosions, accelerate their surrounding gas and interact with the ISM. We have made a catalog of FVWs using the Leiden/Dwingeloo HI survey and the HI Southern Galactic Plane Survey, and identified about 90 FVWs. We carried out high-resolution HI observation toward 14 FVWs using Arecibo and Green Bank telescope, and found that about 60% of the observed FVWs are shell-like features and the rest are clumpy or irregular features. However, the number of the observed FVWs is not enough to conjecture the nature of the whole FVWs. Thus, we propose to observe 13 FVWs in the outer and inner Galaxy, and request 39 hours. They are all the FVWs that is available at Arecibo but not observed yet. There is a seperate proposal to map the entire inner Galactic plane by Koo, Gibson, et al. If that proposal is accepted, we may need only 24 hours to map the 8 FVWs in the outer Galaxy.
