A Pulsar Census of the Local Group

We request 89 hours to search for pulsars in sixteen Local Group galaxies at 327 MHz. If successful, this will result in the first ever detection of pulsars outside of the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds. The only means to detect these distant pulsars is to search for high-intensity giant radio pulses. Discovery of pulsars in other galaxies, combined with distance measurements, would be a sensitive probe of ionized component of the local intergalactic medium. Any new extragalactic pulsars will contribute significantly to pulsar evolution studies in other galaxies.
