OH Observations of Comet C/2006 M4 SWAN

Comet C/2006 M4 SWAN has recently brightened by 4 visual magnitudes. This brightening behavior in a long-period comet often suggests a fragmentation of the nucleus. Fragmentation events generally result in a dramatic increase in gas production and could lead to total disruption of the body. Observations of split and fragmenting comets such as this provide an important view of the fresh, unprocessed interior ices that are preserved from the time of the formation of the comet in the early solar system. We request to use the L-wide receiver to observe OH (as a tracer of its parent molecule water) in this comet for the next four days, to monitor the gas production and outflow velocities. The data will be particularly interesting for comparison with our recent observations of the fragments of periodic comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3.
