Proposal Title: Test Observing with 6 to 8 GHz Receiver
ABSTRACT:
We request time for test observations with the 6 to 8 GHz cryogenic receiver currently being assembled by J.
Pandian with NAIC sta in Ithaca and Arecibo. We expect the receiver to be shipped to Arecibo late in Summer
2003, and then go through assembly and checkout period in the early Fall. By November, we expect that it will be
ready to be installed on the telescope, and want to ensure that there is adequate test time scheduled for fully
testing the system for astronomical observations. This means work beyond basic pointing and focus, including such
things as optimizing tertiary position, study of day-night performance varations, checking RFI situation, etc. It is
particularly important that this be done so that real astronomical use can start in February 2004 (based on full
proposal to be submitted for 1 October deadline) to get a good start on Galactic plane survey for methanol masers
prior to arrival of ALFA system. It is this pressure that suggests submission of this proposal to supplement the
generally very limited time for system development.
