Polarisation Calibration for the Arecibo Signal Processor

We prop ose an extension of the high quality, full Stokes Parameter calibration pro cedures develop ed by Heiles and others for sp ectroscopy to a new backend based on realtime voltage pro cessing in a PC array. Our initial scientific goals are improved precision timing of pulsars and new pulsar studies aimed at deep er understanding of the emission mechanism, although a numb er of other scientific pro jects will also greatly b enifit from our backend. The PC array backend will provide a general purp ose platform for new approaches in signal pro cessing for many astronomical and atmospheric goals. We prop ose to have 55 hours of Arecib o observing time for this.
