Proposal Title: Radar Characterization of NEAs: Using Moderate Resolution Imaging, Astrom
etry, and a Systematic Survey
ABSTRACT:
The purpose of this work is conduct the characterization of nearEarth asteroids (NEAs) accessible to the Arecibo
Observatory planetary radar during the 2016 calendar year, focusing on those objects expected to be of moderate
to lowresolution (the higherresolution objects are covered in a separate proposal). This e#ort will consist of three
approaches: (1) the performance of moderateresolution imaging of 19 objects to improve their orbital solutions,
determine their radar reflectance properties, characterize their basic shape and morphologies, and look for
indications of a multiple component systems; (2) the performance of astrometric measurements (target range and
Doppler shift) on 2/3 of a collection of 39 objects, in order to improve their orbital solutions; and (3) the conduct
of monthly 8hour (overnight) systematic observations, primarily for the purpose of performing either (1) or (2)
above on newly discovered objects that could not be included in this proposal.
