Proposal Title: 2MASS Galaxies in the Zone of Avoidance
ABSTRACT:
The 2-Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) has now nearly completed observations of the whole sky. Because the
extinction at K{band (lambda=2.2microns) is only 1/10th that at optical wavelengths, 2MASS is able to identify
galaxies deep into the \Zone of Avoidance" (ZoA) around the Milky Way. In this project, we will examine bright
galaxies within 10 deg of the Galactic plane. The primary goal of this project is to develop a more detailed picture
of the large scale structure within the ZoA. These observations are complementary to other HI and optical redshifts
being collected to form a complete sample of 2MASS galaxies to K=12.0.
