The HI masses of galaxies as a function of stellar luminosity

We propose to follow up on Nancay non-detections of a sample of SDSS galaxies. The sample is designed to provide an unbiased cross-section of galaxy stellar and HI mass content for galaxies of various luminosities. The observations already carried out at Nancay have detected over 60 percent of the galaxies, showing surprises both in the galaxies that were detected and that were undetected. Arecibo observations will provide much more sensitive limits or detections and more clearly characterize the HI characteristics of these galaxies.
