Prop osal Title: Followup monitoring of a bursting T6.5-type brown dwarf, J1047+21 at 5 GHz with the Mock spectrometer ABSTRACT:
Our analysis of the data taken earlier this year for the proposal a2471 to detect radio bursts from the coolest brown dwarfs (BDs) and the best exoplanet candidates at 5 GHz has revealed a burst of 100% polarized, coherent emission from the T6.5 BD, J1047+21. The coolest BD, from which a similar emission has been detected so far is of type L3.5 - much warmer than J1047+21, whose temperature may be around as low as ~ 900K. Since the best explanation of such bursts is the cyclotron maser instability (CMI) in presence of kGauss magnetic fields, such detections offer an excellent diagnostic of the internal structure of BDs, all the way down to planet-like bodies, which is certainly the case of J1047+21. Our observation indicates that strong magnetic fields can be maintained by the coolest BDs, possibly including the most massive bodies classified as exoplanets. A sporadic nature of these high-frequency bursts requires extended monitoring to confirm them, determine the geometry of the field and, possibly the BD's rotation period. Therefore, we propose to conduct urgent monitoring observations of J1047+21 as soon as possible, on several consecutive days, using the Mock spectrometer at 5 GHz.
