Special Interest Group Announcement
Rosette Nebula imaged by Brian Van Liew

The Amateur Astronomers Association of Princeton invites its members to learn astro imaging!

Have you wanted to learn how to create images like those you see in the astronomy magazines and web sites? Well, here's your chance to kindle the motivation with like-minded AAAP members.

Perhaps you want to take an image through that new scope you got for Christmas, but you’re not sure the best way to go about it. Or you just want to learn more about astrophotography but you didn’t know where to turn. Here’s your chance to get together, on a regular basis, with others who have similar questions; similar interests.

AAAP member and astrophotographer  Brian Van Liew  is preparing to host a AAAP SIG  (Special Interest Group) covering digital astrophotography. If you are interested in sitting in and sharing your experiences, or want to learn more of what could be accomplished if you dare to pick up a camera, web camera or dedicated astronomical ccd and put it to a telescope, then you should come by and check it out. Several aspects to imaging will be gone over starting with simple single shot pictures through long exposure imaging and other related topics.

The first series of meetings will cover topics such as:
  • Types of imaging equipment
  • Pros & Cons of different cameras
  • Types of astronomy targets
  • Camera Features
  • Telescope mount types
  • Best equipment for specific celestial objects
Designed for the novice, Brian will be holding one hour meetings at his home in Belle Mead, NJ for the initial gatherings. Some later sessions to be held at the Simpson Observatory at WC Park. These meetings will be held tentatively every 3-4 weeks on Saturday evenings beginning early in 2006. If there is an interest in this another email will follow to those who would like to participate. Don’t be left out in the dark!

If you would like to join this SIG, please email Brian as soon as possible. Here's a chance to move into astrophotography the right way: with help, support and enthusiasm of your peers at the AAAP !
