The GIMP

The GIMP is (GNU Image Manipulation Program) an image manipulation program suitable for photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. Many people find it extremely useful in creating logos and other graphics for web pages. The GIMP has many of the tools and filters you would expect to find in similar commercial offerings, and some interesting extras as well. Some of the features:

  • Layers, layer masks, auxillary channels, and alpha channels.
  • Fully scriptable, allowing automatically generated logos (like the one at the top of this page), and non-interactive processing.
  • Tile-based to allow HUGE image manipulation with limited physical memory.
  • Plug-ins, extensions are now more flexible. They have access to all image attributes and can invoke each other as well as internal GIMP procedures.
  • A new interface built on GTK/GDK instead of Motif.
