2006, Issue 3

Theoretical justification and basic approaches for preparation of the second edition of the Red Book of Saratov region. - Shlyakhtin G.V., Zavialov E.V., Berezutsky M.A. - Analysis of the flora and fauna diversity in the Saratov region is presented, the necessity to take care to preserve the biodiversity of the region is justified. The primary role of taking an inventory and long-term monitoring of the flora and fauna status in the problem of rare and disappearing species preservation is indicated. The international and domestic experience on the development and application of nature protection laws and keeping Red Books is analyzed. Theoretical approaches to classifying plant and animal species as more or less rare ones have been developed, criteria of the nature protection status of flora and fauna objects are given. A structure of the species entry for the second edition of the Red Book is proposed (category and status of taxons, their occurrence, habitats and mode of life, abundance and limiting factors, taken and necessary protection measures, information source, compiler). It is expedient to present modern occurrence data in the regional Red Book using geographical intelligence technologies.

Key words: protected species, criteria, structure, Red Book, Saratov region.

Fungus, lichen and plant species to be included into the second edition of the Red Book of Saratov region. - Arkhipova E.A., Berezutsky M.A., Boldyrev V.A., Bulanaya M.V., Bulanyi Yu.I., Kostetsky O.V., Mayevski V.V., Panin A.V., Protoklitova T.B., Reshetnikova T.B., Serova L.A., Stepanov M.V., Stukov V.I., Khudyakova L.P., Cherepanova L.A., Shilova I.V. - A list of fungus, lichen, and plant species to be included into the second edition of the Red Book of the Saratov region is proposed (1 species of lichens, 22 fungi, 14 mossy species, 3 lycopodiums, 10 filices, 1 gymnosperms, 255 angiosperms). The necessity to correct and extend the protected taxon list in comparison with the first edition is substantiated. Principles of taxon selection for the second edition are discussed.

Key words: lichens, fungi, plants, protected species, Red Book, Saratov region.

Anthropogenic effect monitoring, strategy for revealing and conservation of rare and disappearing animals in Saratov region. - Zavialov E.V., Shlyakhtin G.V., Anikin V.V., Tabachishin V.G., Yakushev N.N. - Analysis of the diversity of anthropogenic factors and the degree of their negative effect on the animal populations in the Saratov region is given. All the factors of both direct and indirect influence are arranged by the degree of their significance concerning the biological diversity dynamics of the region. All the kinds of anthropogenic effect are clustered in three types based on the main direction of the corresponding stress factor. Theoretical reasons of application of the specific and ecosystematic concepts in preservation of rare and disappearing animal species at a regional level are considered. A preservation strategy of rare and disappearing species of the Saratov region fauna has been developed in detail, an algorithm of the implementation of its key points is offered.

Key words: fauna, population, protected species, anthropogenic factor, Saratov region.

Rare and disappearing species of freshwater invertebrates in the Red Book of Saratov region. - Yermokhin M.V., Yevdokimov N.A. - The status of some rare and disappearing species of hydrobionts and amphibiotic insects included in the Red Book of the Saratov region is analyzed. Insertion of 25 species of freshwater invertebrates (including 9 species of fairy shrimps and 1 conchostraca) into the second edition is substantiated. A change in the protection status of 6 species (Medical Leach, Summer Toadpole, Spring Toadpole, Pristicephalus josephinae, Banded Agrion, Calopterix virgo) included in the first edition of the regional Red Book is shown.

Key words: hydrobionts, amphibiotic insects, protected species, Saratov region.

Rare and disappearing invertebrate land species of Saratov region. - Anikin V.V. - The problem of population status of some rare and disappearing invertebrate land species of the Saratov region is discussed. Noticeable qualitative and quantitative changes in separate elements of the invertebrate fauna are shown to have happened since the first date of publishing the Red Book of the Saratov region (1996), which is connected with various biotic and abiotic environmental factors in the Volga region. A list of species to be included into the second edition of the Red Book is proposed, a number of these species are added for the first time, the others should raise or lower their protection status, several species are excluded from the list of protected taxa. A species list for special attention is attached.

Key words: invertebrate, nature protection, Regional Red Book, Volga region, Russian Federation.

Ichtiofauna of the Northern Lower Volga region: modern trends in the distribution and abundance dynamics of rare and disappearing species. - Zavialov E.V., Shlyakhtin G.V., Ruchin A.B., Shashulovski V.A. - A list of fish species and subspecies to be included into the second edition of the Red Book of the Saratov region has been compiled on the basis of numerous field surveys, collection data, analysis of the literature and other sources. It contains 19 ichtiofauna representatives of the region belonging to 7 orders, 8 families, and 16 genera. 12 new species should be included into the second edition of the regional Red Book and 1 species should be excluded, some reasons have appeared for revision of the current protection status of 2 taxa. A special large list (9 species and subspecies) contains taxa and populations of fishes standing in need of special attention to their status in the environment of the Saratov region.

Key words: ichtiofauna, protected species, regional Red Book, Saratov region.

Rare and disappearing species of amphibians and reptiles to be included into the second edition of the Red Book of Saratov region. - Shlyakhtin G.V., Tabachishin V.G., Zavialov E.V., Tabachishina I.E. - A list of amphibian and reptile species to be included into the second edition of the Red Book of the Saratov region has been compiled on the basis of modern field surveys, collection data, analysis of the literature. It contains 7 herpetofauna representatives of the region belonging to 2 orders, 4 families, and 6 genera. 3 new species should be included into the second edition of the regional Red Book and 1 species should be excluded, some reasons have appeared for revision of the current protection status of 2 taxa. A special large list (15 species) contains populations of amphibians and reptiles standing in need of special attention to their status in the environment of the Saratov region.

Rare and disappearing birds in the Red Book of Saratov region. - Zavialov E.V., Shlyakhtin G.V., Tabachishin V.G., Yakushev N.N., Khrustov A.V., Piskunov V.V., Belyachenko A.V. - A list of bird species and subspecies to be included into the second edition of the Red Book of the Saratov region has been compiled on the basis of numerous field surveys, collection data, analysis of the literature and other sources. It contains 73 ornithofauna representatives of the region belonging to 14 orders, 30 families, and 59 genera. On the basis of quantitative indicators and population trends the candidate birds are categorized in six categories, for each of which the nature protection status has been determined. 28 new species should be included into the second edition of the regional Red Book and 4 species should be excluded, some reasons have appeared for revision of the current protection status of 15 taxa. A special large list (37 species) contains taxa and populations of birds standing in need of special attention to their status in the environment of the Saratov region.
