If you are not planning to do any astrophotography, go ahead and buy any of them. Otherwise there isn't any good choice of GoTo scope with photography-grade mount out there... Add more cash or forget of GoTo.

Spasibo ! Also, I found that Celestron has recently introduced "Nextstar 4" 4' Mak-Cassegrain telescope, which costs just slightly more than 4' Newtonian (NexStar 114 GT). I wonder whether it has any added benefits, other than possibility of terrestrial observations?

Nextar is better choice, than 114GT. But
for advanced beginner i recommend to cosider larger scope without goto, you will see much more at same cost. |

NexStar 4 goes withot a tripod and with only 1 eyepiece (53x). So consider buing another eyepiece and probably a barlow (to get higher magnifications). And think about what you are gonna do with a tripod or another thing to put it on.
N114GT is a fair short newt, goes with 2 eyepieces (50x & 100x) and a tripod. You only need a 2x barlow (Optional, if you wanna 200x). NexStars usualy have good optics ang pretty good GOTO accuracy (if I use 2 star aligment option with "NexStar aligment FAQ" tips, desired objects are in FOV even at 100x). But they have noisy motors and poor tracking - objects drifts out of FOV in 10-40 mins (depending on particular scope). Also 114 requere more accurate collimation since it's a short newt (with correction lens though). http://www.angelfire.com/ns/nexstar/ |

Hi again. Thanks for your input. In fact I am Lithuanian (Litovec), and I speak Russian quite fluently. Thus, Gari is very much correct - I simply do not have Russian language support in my PC.
I am also considering Meade ETX 105 or 125. Ideally I hope to get one of these scoper second hand, so that I would be able to fit into my budget of up to 800$. Mindaugas |
