The Collision of Comet P/ShoemakerLevy 9 and Jupiter
IAU Colloquium 156
Hosted by the Space Telescope Science Institute
and The Johns Hopkins University
May 9±12, 1995
Baltimore, Maryland USA
The Collision of comet P/ShoemakerLevy 9 (SL9) and Jupiter in July 1994 was one of the
most dramatic astronomical events in the history of science. Almost every major observatory
in the world participated in the observations of the spectacular collisions and their aftermath.
Enormous quantities of data were recorded during the campaign. Preliminary analyses of
a small fraction of the data have resulted in a #urry of reports, sometimes contradictory,
propagated electronically and at ad hoc meetings. There has, however, been insuf®cient time
for careful analysis or synthesis of the many different data sets available.
On 912 May 1995 the STScI and JHU will host a meeting that will provide the ®rst
opportunity for a review of the SL9 campaign and a synthesis of a majority of the observational
programs. This meeting is being held as part of the STScI's regular May symposium series
and is sponsored by the IAU. The format of the meeting will provide a large amount of time
for discussion and comparison of results. Invited reviews will be published by the Cambridge
University Press and there will be a special journal issue for contributed papers.
We anticipate that this meeting will attract a large attendance, possibly more than the 325
people that we can accomodate. Thus, attendance at the meeting will be by invitation, as is
common with IAU colloquia. Invitations can be requested by contacting Cheryl Schmidt at
the Space Telescope Science Institute (by email: schmidt@stsci.edu, by regular mail: Ms.
Cheryl Schmidt, Space Telescope Science Institute, 3700 San Martin Drive, Baltimore MD
21218, USA, by phone: 4103384404).
