DAILY REPORT #992

PERIOD COVERED: 0800 EST
Daily Status Report as of 286/1200Z.

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed FOS/RD 5047 (Cycle 3 FOS Discriminator Test)

The Faint Object Spectrograph was used to conduct a discriminator
test. Optimal FOS discriminator settings allow each diode to reject
noise pulses and to accept real photon pulses. One set of
observations were received and displayed. It looked okay, except for
group two, which had anomalously high counts.

1.2 Completed HSP/PMT 3373 (The Size and Composition of Planetary Ring
Particles - Cycle 2 High)

The High Speed Photometer was used to make observations of star
00460 as it passed behind the rings of the planet Saturn. This is a
continuation of proposal 1080. The intent is to determine the size
and the composition of the particles that make up the ring. The OSS
monitored the observations, and assessed the data quality. A total
of seven observations were received and displayed. The last four
observations may have been effected by a 79 arcsecond role around
the V1 axis.

1.3 Completed WFC 4713 (WF/PC Cycle 2 Calibration: WFC Internal Delta
Flats)

The Wide Field Camera was used to make a total of three internal
flat calibrations images. All three images were reported to be
normal.

1.4 Completed Two Sets of WFC 5013 (WF/PC Cycle 3 Calibration: WFC
Flats Narrow. 2)

The Wide Field Camera was used to make Two Earth flat calibration
images to be used for flat fielding of WFC observations. The
observations used the narrow band filters, both with and without
neutral density filters. Both observations were received, and both
observations were reported to be saturated.

1.5 Completed FOS/RD 3840 (The Abundance and Time Evolution of Carbon,
Nitrogen, and Oxygen)

The Faint Object Spectrograph and the Wide field Camera were used to
make ultraviolet observations fo the H II regions in galaxy
SBS0940+54 to measure the abundance of CO and NO. The onboard target
acquisition on an offset star was successful. Two science
observations were received and displayed. They both were reported to
have a very low signal.

1.6 Completed WFC 4381 (HST Medium - Deep Survey - Cycle 3)

The Wide Field Camera was used to make two set of medium-deep high
latitude sky survey observations taken in parallel with the prime
science observations. The observations were executed as scheduled,
and both observations were reported to look fine.

1.7 Completed PC/WFC 5026 (WF/PC Cycle 3 Calibration: Rapid Internal
Monitor)

The Wide Field Camera and the Planetary Camera were used to make
internal flat calibration images. These images will be used to look
for measles and daisies (i.e., different forms of contamination),
and to monitor scattered light. The observations were executed as
scheduled, and both observations were reported to look normal.

1.8 Completed Two Sets of WFC 5075 (WF/PC Cycle 3 Calibration: WFC Flats
Wide. 1)

Observations were made to make two standard calibrations to obtain
Earth flats using the Wide Field Camera. Both observations were
taken, and they were reported to be saturated.

1.9 Completed Two Sets of FOS/BL/RD 5200 (FOS Cycle 3 Scattered - Light
Calibration)

The Faint Object Spectrograph was used to make observations of the
late type star Alpha Orionis (aka, the super giant star
Betelgeuse) to determine how much of the light from the continuum at
wavelenghts greater than 3000 A0 is being scattered by the gratings
and shows up as spectra of weak ultraviolet sources. The first two
onboard target acquisitions were monitored by the OSS, and they were
successful.

1.10 Completed FGS 4893 (Orbital Motions of Close Binary Stars - Cycle 3
High)

Fine Guidance Sensor #3 was used to make astrometric observations of
the binary star system HD214511 to obtain its orbital elements.
These observations are important since most of the estimates of
stellar mass are made by observing elements of these systems. The
astrometry was monitored and no problems were seen in the telemetry.

1.11 Completed Two Sets of PC 4714 (WF/PC 2 Calibration: PC Internal
Delta Flats)

The Faint Object Camera was used to make one internal flat
calibration image which will be used for the restoration of Earth
flat images, which were altered due to changes in quantum efficiency
which occurred after decontamination operations. The observations
was received and displayed in the OSS. It was reported to look okay.

1.12 Uplinked Updated Ephemeris Tables, Per MOSES 2871

All six ephemeris were successfully uplinked at 286/0018Z.

2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY:

2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions:

Scheduled Acquisitions : 5
Successful : 5
Scheduled Reacquisitions : 10
Successful : 10

There was a loss of lock at 286/0733Z near the
end of an observation. The subsequent acquisition
was successful.

2.2 FHST Updates:

Scheduled : 1
Successful : 1

2.3 Significant HSTARs: None

2.4 Operations Note:

The third in a series of Joint Integrated Simulation (JIS) exercises
was conducted successfully on September 29. This simulation covered
the planned activities surrounding the deployment of the HST
following the servicing mission EVAs. Personnel from GSFC, HQ, and
JSC supported this simulation which included nominal timeline
activities and anomalies. Contingency procedures developed for the
servicing mission were effectively used to handle the anomalies
introduced in the simulation.
