HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE
DAILY REPORT #1124

PERIOD COVERED: 0700 EST
Daily Status Report as of 113/1200Z.

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 5560 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal
Monitor. 1)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal bias, K-Spot, and flat
calibration observations to monitor the CCD camera electronics, the
optical alignment, and for contamination. A total of ten images were
taken. They all were reported to be nominal. No anomalies were
noted.

1.2 Completed Three Sets of GHRS/1 5593 (GHRS ECH-A Blaze Function
Calibration: Cycle 4)

The High Resolution Spectrograph was used to make blaze function
(aka ripple function) tests of the Echelle-A grating using standard
star MU-Columbae. The observations were made at several carrousel
position settings. Ten observations were received and displayed in
the OSS. They all were reported to look nominal. There was one
recentering during one of the exposures.

1.3 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5476 (Continuum Snapshot of 3CR Radio
Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot images of radio galaxies
3C215.0 and 3C327.0 as part of a continuum survey and to study the
galaxies' morphology. Four images were received and displayed. All
four were reported to look okay.

1.4 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5397 (Determination of the
Extragalactic Distance Scale: Cycle 4 High)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of galaxies NGC-4321 and
NGC-5457-FL to help establish the Hubble constant to an accuracy of
better than 10% by measuring the periods of Cepheid variable stars
within the galaxies. The images were received and displayed. They
were reported to look fine.

1.5 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5570 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration:
Earthflats, Large Set)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make a set of Earth flat calibration images
using different filters in order to construct high quality flat
fields of the OTA illumination pattern. A total of eight images were
received and displayed. Four images were reported to be okay, one
was saturated, one was underexposed, and two remain on the science
tape recorder. No anomalies were noted.

1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5415 (The Distance to the M-96 Galaxy Group: Cycle
5 Medium)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of Cepheid variable stars
within the galaxy NGC-3368 which itself is located in the M-96
galaxy cluster. This is to help determine the distance to this
galactic group, and to improve the determination of the Hubble
constant. Two observations were taken, one was received and
displayed, and the other remains on the science tape recorder. No
anomalies were noted.

1.7 Completed FOC/96 5517 (FOC Absolute Sensitivity: Cycle 4 )

The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make absolute sensitivity
measurements using standard ultraviolet target star BD+75D325. The
decision observation was received in real time without problems. A
SIP corrective maneuver was successfully uplinked to the spacecraft.
The observations were executed in fine lock. No anomalies were
noted.

1.8 Completed GHRS/1 5542 (GHRS Side One Wavelength (1st Order
Gratings): Cycle 4)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) used the spectral
calibration lamp (Side Two) to calibrate the Side One
characteristics. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no
anomalies were noted.

1.9 Completed GHRS/2 5473 (The Interstellar Abundance of Krypton: Cycle
4 High)

The High Resolution Spectrograph was used to make observations of
the
star Delta Scorpii which is an O/B class star to study the
abundance of Krypton to provide information about stellar
nucleosynthesis and stellar evolution. The onboard target
acquisition was successful. No problems were seen during the
execution of the observations. The science data still remains on the
science tape recorder.

1.10 Completed Two Sets S/C/WF/PC-2 5612 (SMOV WF/PC-2 Decontamination)

The WF/PC-2 was used to perform decontamination operations.
Observations of standard star A+81D266, and K-Spot observations were
also taken. A total of nine observations were monitored and
displayed. All of the observations were reported to be nominal. On
the first set of observations the TEC turn-off and heatpipe heater
turn-on were monitored. The cold junction temperatures were seen to
rise to +22 dec C, and then stabilize. On the second set of
observations The WF/PC-2 heat pipe were turned off. The cold
junction temperatures started to drop almost immediately. The TECs
were then turned on, and the cold junction temperatures seemed to
stabilize at -88 deg C.

1.11 Completed FOC/96 5377 (UV Observations of Pulsars: Cycle 4 Medium)

The Faint Object Camera (f/96)was used to make ultraviolet
observations of the known X-Ray pulsar PSR0950+08 to see if its
ultraviolet flux matches with the model of neutron star atmospheres.
Three observations were received and displayed. They were reported
to look okay.

1.12 Completed FGS 5338 (Linking the HIPPARCOS to the Extragalactic
Reference Frame, NEWHIP-D)

The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of the
extra-galactic object NEWEGOD-61. These observations are to help tie
the HIPPARCOS and extra-galactic reference frames together at the
0.0005 arcsecond and 0.0005 arcsecond/year level. Six out of the
eleven observations occurred during AOS. Of these, two were reported
to have failed to acquire the target. No other anomalies were noted.

1.13 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5370 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4
Medium, High Galactic Latitude)

The WF/PC-2 was used in parallel with the prime science observations
to make high galactic latitude observations as part of a medium-deep
sky survey. The main purpose of these observations is to study the
evolution and structure of galaxies. Four observations were received
and displayed in the OSS. There were some occasional recenterings
reported.

2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMERY:

2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions:

Scheduled Acquisitions : 8
Successful : 8
Scheduled Reacquisitions : 6
Successful : 6

2.2 FHST Updates:

Scheduled :21
Successful :21

2.3 Significant HSTARs: None

2.4 Operations Notes:

During the past weekend, there were no significant problems in any
HST subsystem.

The RMGA calibration exercise, which was conducted on Friday,
proceeded nominally. The DF-224 patch which modified the RWA
coefficient limits, also appears to be functioning well. Plots of
the vehicle position path, while the HST was in "A" telemetry
format, show no evidence of wheel vehicle crossing affecting vehicle
pointing. Additional data will be collected in "P" format during
upcoming TDRSS services.
