DAILY REPORT #1209

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z
Daily Status Report as of 236/1200Z.

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 5560 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal
Monitor. 1)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal bias, K-Spot, and flat
calibration observations to monitor the CCD camera electronics, the
optical alignment, and to check for contamination. The observations
were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted.

1.2 Complete FOS/RD 5642 (Observations of the Impact of Comet
Shoemaker-Levy (1993E) and Jupiter)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make
observations to support the Jupiter/Shoemaker-Levy event. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were
noted.

1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 5563 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Photometric Calibration
Monitor 1: UV /OPT STD.)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make photometric calibration images of
ultraviolet standard star GRW+70D582 and monitor the photometric
stability and quantum efficiency of the WF/PC-2. The observations
were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 5475 (A Snapshot Survey for Blue Stragglers in
Magellanic Cluster Cores)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make short exposure snapshot images of the
blue straggler stars located in populous cluster NGC-2162. The
intent is to find out if blue straggler stars exist within this
cluster. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no
anomalies were noted.

1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5562 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal
Monitor 3: Darks)

The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain several 30-minute long, dark
exposures to provide ongoing calibration of the CCD dark current and
to monitor and characterize the evolution of hot pixels. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were
noted.

1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 1070 (High Resolution Imaging of Radio Galaxies at
Large Redshift)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make deep images of radio galaxy 3C280. The
observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were
reported.

1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 5446 (The Nuclei of Nearby S0 and Spiral Galaxies:
A PC Snapshot Imaging)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the core region of
galaxy NGC-4818 to provide statistics on the nuclear cups, stellar
condensations, and inner stellar disks and dust lanes. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were
noted.

1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 5479 (Subarcsecond Structure in Nearby AGNs)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot observations of the nearby
active galactic nuclei of NGC-5252 to study the interactions between
the central engine, the stars, and the interstellar matter in the
AGN. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies
were noted.

1.9 Completed FGS 5333 (Linking the HIPPARCOS to the Extragalactic
Reference frame: BR12-23, Part 2)

The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of several stars
(i.e., 2005-489IN, 820-REF, 821-REF, 822-REF, INCA221-13) whose
apparent position lies near extragalactic objects. All of these
objects have been observed by the HIPPARCOS satellite. The intent is
to tie the HIPPARCOS reference frame to the extragalactic reference
frame. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies
were noted.

1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 5370 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4 High, High
Galactic Latitude)

The WF/PC-2 was used in parallel with the prime science observations
to make high galactic latitude observations as part of a medium-deep
sky survey. The observations were completed as planned, and no
problems were reported.

1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 5655 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal
Monitor. 2: Flats Part 2)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make both dark and visual flats. The
observations were completed as planned, and no problems were
reported.

1.12 Completed FOS/RD 5531 (FOS Target Acquisition Test)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make
observations of standard star STAR-04343 to conduct an acquisition
test. A TALED observation was also taken. The observations were
completed as planned. The onboard peakup target acquisition failed.
It seems that the dwell scan did not execute properly. It was
reported that this affected a total of seven observations.

1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 5092 (GTO Low Latitude Parallel Program: Cycle 4)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations taken in parallel with the
prime science observations. This is part of a survey to take
pictures of a large number of fields within 30 degrees of the
galactic plane. The observations were completed as planned, and no
problems were reported.

1.14 Completed WF/PC-2 5493 (Synoptic Monitoring of Seasonal Phenomena
on Mars: Cycle 4 Medium)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the planet Mars at
selected seasons, looking for periodic changes. The observations
were executed as scheduled. Lock on the guide star was lost and not
recovered. For some of the observations the Take Data Flag (TDF) was
down and the shutter only toggled and did not stay open for the
planned viewing period. Four observations were affected.

2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY:

2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions:

Scheduled Acquisitions : 6
Successful : 5

At 236/0131Z there was a single FGS acquisition
which failed to coarse track using FGS #1.
Subsequent acquisitions were successful.

Scheduled Reacquisitions : 4
Successful : 4

2.2 FHST Updates:

Scheduled :36
Successful :35

At 235/1552Z there was an anomalous FHST update
with large errors. Subsequent FGS Acquisitions
were successful.

2.3 Significant HSTARs: None

2.4 Operations Notes:

HST engineers report that all subsystems are performing as expected.
Within the EPS subsystem, the Battery #1 Capacity Test is proceeding
nominally. The discharge cycle was initiated on schedule, with the
discharge curve currently somewhat ahead of predictions based on
previous cycles. The test is expected to be completed later today.
