HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE
DAILY REPORT #1067

PERIOD COVERED: 0700 EST
Daily Status Report as of 034/1200Z.

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5475 (A Snapshot Survey for Blue
Stragglers in Magellanic Cluster Cores)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make short exposure snapshot images of the
blue straggler stars located in populous clusters NGC-2173, and
NGC-458. A populous cluster is the Magellanic Cloud equivalent of a
galactic globular cluster. The observations were made with two
different color filters. The intent is to find out if blue
straggler stars exist within these clusters. A total of four images
were
received and displayed. They were reported to look nominal.

1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 5156 (Optical Emission in Double Radio Galaxy
Lobes: Cycle 4)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the compact hot spots
in the double radio lobes of galaxy 0812+020 to search for optical
counterparts of the radio hot spots. Two images were received and
displayed. No problems were noted.

1.3 Completed FOC/96 5139 (A search For Low-Mass Companions to Nearby
Astrometric Binaries)

The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to to search for faint
companions near the astrometric binary star VYS782-C. Two FOC images
were received and displayed. No anomalies were noted.

1.4 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 4709 (WF/PC-2 Internal Monitor)

The WF/PC camera was used to make a series of routine dark
calibration images to monitor the instrument's performance. The
observations were monitored in the OSS, and the data quality was
assessed. Eight images were received and displayed. Several were
reported to be underexposed.

1.5 Completed FOC/96 5185 (Magellanic Cloud Planetary Nebulae: Cycle 4)

The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make observations of the
planetary nebula LMC-N97 which is located in the Large Magellanic
Cloud to determine its mass and age. Two images were received and
displayed. No anomalies were noted.

1.6 Completed COSTAR/U 4744 (COSTAR/GHRS Fine Alignment - Focus)

The High Resolution Spectrograph was used to make observations of
ultraviolet standard star AGK81D266 to determine the best position
of the M1 mirror. The star was observed at five different focus
positions. All of the spiral searches and corrective pointing
maneuvers worked as expected. All of the observations continued
without apparent incident.

1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 4721 (WF/PC-2 Decontamination and TEC Turn On)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet photometric observations of
the star standard A+81D262, plus K-Spots, and dark calibration
images. All four sets of CCDs were used. A total of 11 images were
received and displayed in the OSS. No anomalies were reported.

1.8 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 5240 (SMOV-WF/PC-2 Flat Fields
Calibration)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make four sets of visual internal flat
images.
The images were received and displayed. They were reported to be
okay.

1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 5203 (Supernova 1987A)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make eight images of supernova SN1987A in
four different band passes. The objective is to detect the neutron
star at the nova's core, and to study the nature of the
circumstellar nebula and the evolution of its ring. All eight
images were received and displayed in the OSS. No anomalies were
noted.

1.10 Completed FGS 5425 (SMOV K-Factor Verification Test/Trans Scans for
FGS 1,2,3)

The standard star OF-201 which is located in the open cluster M-35
was observed with all three FGSs to determine how the servicing
mission activities affected the S-Curve signatures. The astrometric
observations were monitored, and no anomalies were reported.

1.11 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 4819 (WF/PC-2 PSF Characterization)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make multiple exposures of the globular
Cluster Omega Centauri during coarse and fine dwell scans. The fine
scans were only 0.025 arcseconds apart. Two different filters were
used. The OSS monitored the observations, and assessed the data
quality. No anomalies were noted.

1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 5099 (Imaging and Spectroscopy of a Complete
Sample of Bright Nearby Quasars)

The WF/PC-2 was used to image nearby quasar PG0953+414 using filter
F606W. The goal is to identify the morphology of the underlying
galaxy. The observations were executed as scheduled, and on problems
were reported.
