DAILY REPORT #1424

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 06/30/95 - 0000Z (UTC) 07/03/95

Daily Status Report as of 184/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 5479 (Subarcsecond Structure in Nearby AGNs)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot observations of the nearby
active galactic nuclei of MARK612 and Mark607 to study the interactions
between the central engine, the stars, and the interstellar matter in the
AGN. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were
noted.

1.2 Completed FOS/BL 5460 (Constraints on Massive Star Evolution from
Carbon and Oxygen Abundance)

The FOS (Blue Side) was used to observe HD269888 to obtain UV spectra
of several Wolf-Rayet stars in the LMC to determine the C/He and O/C ratios.
The observation was completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported.

1.3 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 6251 (Medium Deep Survey - Crafting
Test)

The WF/PC-2 was used in this continuation of the medium deep survey.
The proposal is targeting rare objects (lenses, peculiar galaxies, faint
stars) and sources related to the faint blue galaxy problem. This
observation was completed with no reported problems.

1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 5584 (Parallel High Resolution Imaging of Diffuse
Objects in the LMC)

The WF/PC-2 was used to observe diffuse object LMC-30Dor. Of
particular interest were H II regions, planetary nebulae, SNRs, supershells,
and proto-stellar and maser regions. The observation completed normally
without report of any errors.

1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5560 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor.
1)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal bias, K-Spot, and flat
calibration observations to monitor the CCD camera electronics, the optical
alignment, and to check for contamination. The observations were completed as
planned, and no anomalies were noted.

1.6 Completed Two Sets of FOS/RD 5704 (Quasar Absorption Line Studies of
Starbursting Galaxy Environments)

The Faint Object Spectrograph was used to make observations of the
star bursting regions of galaxies Q0048-261, Q0042-248 and NGC-520.48 to
study the gas outflow by obtaining FOS spectra of Quasars located behind
these galaxies. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no
anomalies were reported.

1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 5447 (The Nature of Primeval Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make deep polarization observations of the
distant, massive galaxy MGO406-244 to look for molecular gas, dust, and star
formation. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were
noted.

1.8 Completed FOS/RD 5718 (The Nucleus of M-83: FOS/GHRS Spectroscopy of
Nucleus)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make observations
of the young cluster NGC-5236-6 which is located in M-83. The objective is to
deduce the stellar content of the starburst region. A GHRS Status Buffer
Message #16 was received at 183:0930Z indicating an X-Balance anomaly (HSTAR
5226). No problems were indicated with the science observations. The
observations were completed as planned.

1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6252 (GTO Pure Parallel Program - Cycle 4 Crafting
Test)

This parallel program uses the WF/PC-2 and target fields at galactic
latitudes above 10 degrees. Galactic star counts and the structure of the
galactic halo will be studied. The observation completed as planned, and no
problems were reported.
