DAILY REPORT #1529

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 12/04/95 - 0000Z (UTC) 12/05/95

Daily Status Report as of 339/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 6188 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: =
Dark)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal dark calibration images. The =
observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported.

1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 5972 (Determination of the Extragalactic Distance =
Scale)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxy NGC-3351 =
looking for standard candle Cepheid variable stars. The purpose of these =
observations is to help estimate the Hubble constant with an accuracy of =
10%. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were =
noted.

1.3 Completed FOS/BL 5843 (First Ultraviolet Spectrographic Survey of =
2060 Charon)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (f/48) was used to make ultraviolet =
spectrographic observations of the deep solar-system object 2060-Chiron =
while it is near perihelion. This will provide information on the =
properties of the surface of Chiron and the gas surrounding it. At =
338/032856Z and at 338/084050Z, there were two losses of lock, resulting =
in the take data flag going down. Otherwise, the observations were =
executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 6313 (The Hubble Deep Field (HDF) Experiments)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make selected ultraviolet, visible and =
near-inferred in the continuous view zone (i.e., CVZ) using the Hubble =
Deep Field HDF-123649 to study the morphology and spectral information on =
extremely faint field galaxies. This is a feasibility test in preparation =
for further studies. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no =
anomalies were reported.

1.5 Completed GHRS/2 5857 (Is Mixing or Mass Loss the Cause of Decline =
in 12C/13C?)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make =
spectrographic observations of the halo star HD3546 to study the ratio of =
its 12C/13C carbon and the abundance of its boron. The results will =
influence models of evolution off of the main sequence. The observations =
were completed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5913 (Low-Mass Binaries and Luminosity Fuction)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the low-mass binary =
system SGP017 (Late Type Class M dwarf stars). The intent is to determine =
why the local stellar luminosity function is flat below Mv=3D12, while =
that found from more distant stars falls by an order of magnitude by =
Mv=3D14. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies =
were noted.

1.7 Completed Two Sets of FOC/48 6255 (Long Slit Spectroscopy of the =
Center of M-31)

The Faint Object Camera (f/48) was used to make long-slit =
spectrographic observations of the central region and double nucleus of =
galaxy NGC-224 (aka, the Andromeda Galaxy). The aim is to get a =
high-resolution rotation curve and also to get velocity dispersion as a =
function of position. A dark calibration image was also taken. The =
observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.8 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6114 (White Dwarf Distance and =
Precision Age for the Globular Cluster 47 Tuc)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of white dwarf star =
WD1647+591 which is located in the globular cluster 47 Tuc in order to =
study the cluster's age and distance. This set of observations will be =
used to determine the distance to 47 Tuc, hopefully to an accuracy of =
better than 10%. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no =
anomalies were noted.

1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 5849 (Host Galaxies of Luminous Nearby Quasars)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make deep exposure observations of host =
galaxy PG1444+407 which is known to have a luminous nearby quasar. The =
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 6119 (Snapshot Survey for Companions of =
Planetary Nebula Nuclei)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of =
planetary nebula NGC-3132 to study its nuclei and to look for possible =
companions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies =
were noted.

1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 5999 (The Nuclear Structure of S0 Galaxies: A PC =
Imaging Survey)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of S0 class galaxy =
NGC-2768 in order to study its nuclear structure. This is a part of a =
large survey of S0, E/S0, and S0/a class galaxies. The targets will cover =
a wide range in luminosity and environment. The observations were =
completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted.
