DAILY REPORT #1635

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 05/15/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 05/16/96

Daily Status Report as of 137/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed Two Sets of FOS/RD 6236 (FOS Cycle 5: Location of =
Spectra and Wavelength Calibration: Red Side Detector)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make =
calibration observations in order to determine the location of the =
spectra and to perform a wavelength calibration. All observations were =
internal. A Taled calibration was also completed. The observations were =
completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 5997 (The Cores of Elliptical Galaxies in the =
Coma Cluster)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the large elliptical =
galaxies GAL-125926 and GAL-125044 which are located in the Coma Cluster. =
The purpose is to study the luminosity profiles in their central nuclear =
regions. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies =
were noted.

1.3 Completed FOS/RD 6577 (An Expanded Survey for Study of the =
Lyman-Alpha Line and QSO Mg II Absorption)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make =
observations of the QSOs 4C13.39, OI363 and MG0833+112 in order to make a =
survey of their Lyman-Alpha line and the 68 Mg II absorption line =
systems. Each of the two acquisitions scheduled just before the start of =
this proposal, at 136/0209Z and at 136/0221Z, defaulted to FGS control on =
one FGS only. HSTARs 5610 and 5611 were written. Otherwise, the =
observations were completed as scheduled, and no further problems were =
reported.

1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 6352 (Dwarf Eliptical Galaxy Snapshots)

The WF/PC-2 was used to survey FCC174, from a sample of 30 dwarf =
eliptical galaxies. The observations were completed as planned, and no =
anomalies were reported.

1.5 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6009 ( Jovian Stratospheric and =
Tropospheric Circulation and Structure)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make high resolution, multi-filter =
observations of the planet Jupiter to study it stratospheric and =
tropospheric circulation and structure. This study is being done several =
months before and after the Galileo probe entered the atmosphere on Dec. =
7, 1995. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies =
were reported.

1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6365 (A Snapshot survey For Companions and =
Clusters around Wolf-Rayet Stars)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot observations of Wolf-Rayet =
stars WR146 and WR142 in order to look for companion stars and clusters. =
Photometry was performed on the Wolf-Rayet stars and associated stars. =
The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were =
reported.

1.7 Completed FGS 6274 (Linking the HIPPARCOS to the Extragalactic =
Referance Frame)

FGS#3 was used to make astrometeric observations of extra-galactic =
objects 1514-24IN, 640-REF, INCA-221-10, and several other reference =
stars in order to help link the HIPPARCOS satellite reference frame to =
that of the HST. The observations were completed as planned, and no =
anomalies were reported.

1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program)

The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking =
ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science =
observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with =
flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. =
The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were =
reported.

1.9 Completed FOS/RD 6007 (Comparison of Large Scale Structures in QSO =
Absorbers and Galaxies)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make =
observations of Lyman-Alpha absorber QSO B21244+32 to do a comparison =
study of its large scale structure. This target was selected as a deep, =
redshifted galaxy from a survey which already exists. At 136/1602Z, =
about 15 minutes into this seven and one-half hour proposal, there was an =
FOS Mode 2 target acquisition failure. HSTAR 5613 was written. No other =
anomalies were noted.

1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 6187 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Earth Flat)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make Earth streak flat calibration images. =
These streak flats will be used to produce flat fields, to map the OTA =
illumination pattern and, in combination with other data, to produce new =
superflats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems =
were reported.

1.11 Completed FOS/BL/GHRS/1 5947 (The Relationship Between Galaxies =
and Lyman-Alpha Absorbers at Low Redshift)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) and the High Resolution =
Spectrograph (Side One) were used to make observations of Quasar 06-001 =
to study the relation ship between its galaxy and Lyman-Alpha Absorbers =
at Low Redshift. The relationship between the galaxy and low column =
density, metal poor quasar absorbers is poorly understood. The =
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.
