DAILY REPORT #1632

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 05/10/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 05/13/96

Daily Status Report as of 134/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6365 (A Snapshot survey For Companions and =
Clusters around Wolf-Rayet Stars)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot observations of Wolf-Rayet =
star WR40 in order to look for companion stars and clusters. Photometry =
was performed on the Wolf-Rayet star and associated stars. The =
observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.2 Completed GHRS/1/2 6413 (High Velocity Thermal Shock Instabilities =
in the Vela Supernova Remnant)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Both Sides One and Two) were =
used to make high resolution and high signal to noise ratio observations =
of the star HD74455. Ultraviolet light from this star passes through the =
Vela supernova remnant (SNR) and the absorption lines can be used to =
study high velocity thermal shock instabilities in the nebula. The =
observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted.

1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 6642 (White Dwarf Companions to Binary Neutron =
Stars, Astrometric Frame Ties)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the white dwarf star =
STAR-0823 in order to make comparisons of white dwarf star to its binary =
neutron star companion. The main intent is to improve the correspondence =
between the optical and radio coordinate systems. The observations were =
executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 6431 (Determination of the Extragalactric =
Distance Scale)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxy NGC-4548 =
to be used in measuring the periods of Cepheid variable stars within this =
galaxy. This will allow for a more accurate estimate of the distances to =
these galaxies through the period-luminosity relation for the Cepheid =
stars. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies =
were noted.

1.5 Completed FOC/96 5960 (Identifying the Polarization Seyfert 1 =
Mirror in Markarian 463)

The Faint Object Camera (F/96) was used to make polarized light =
observations of Markarian galaxy MARK463 which is a Class 2 Seyfert =
galaxy that displays Seyfert Class 1 spectrum in polarized light. The =
observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported.

1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5964 (Detecting Emission Lines at Half the =
Hubble Time)

The WF/PC-2 was used as part of a parallel program to make =
observations which are used to search for emission lines in distant =
clusters of galaxies. The objective is to study star formation at Z=3D =
0.75. The observations were completed as planned and no problems were =
reported.

1.7 Completed GHRS/1/2 6066 (Distant Futures of Solar Activity)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Both Sides One and Two) were =
used to make observations of the star Arcturus (aka, Alpha Boo and =
HD124897) in order to search for distant futures of solar activity. In =
this proposal the question of what may happen to solar-type activity as =
the Sun ages is investigated by observing an old star whose current =
evolutionary star is consistent with the predicted future state of the =
Sun. During this proposal the multiple losses of lock mentioned in 2.2 =
occurred. In addition, a GHRS status buffer message indicating a =
Y-balance mull failure was reported (HSTAR 5605) at 132/011832Z. Later, =
at 132/014526Z, there were multiple status buffer messages indicating =
that a scan, offset, or peakup scan had been rejected. This was reported =
in HSTAR 5606. The observations were completed as planned, and no =
problems were reported.

1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6187 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Earth Flat)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make Earth streak flat calibration images. =
These streak flats will be used to produce flat fields, to map the OTA =
illumination pattern and, in combination with other data, to produce new =
superflats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems =
were reported.

1.9 Completed FGS 6040 (Ultra-High Angular Resolution of O3 Stars in =
the Carina Nebula)

The FGSs were used in the TRANS mode to make ultra-high resolution =
astrometric observations of the O3 class star HD931129 which is located =
in the Carina Nebula. This is to determine if this object is a single =
star or a multiple star system. The observations were completed as =
scheduled, and no anomalies were reported.

1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program)

The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking =
ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science =
observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with =
flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. =
The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were =
reported.

1.11 Completed FOC/96 6527 (Search for the Optical Counterpart of =
PRS1055-52)

The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make observations of =
the star STAR-1057 in order to look for an optical counterpart to object =
PRS1055-52 (an isolated neutron star). This object has been observed =
both in the radio and gamma ray regions. The observations were completed =
as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported.

1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 5971 (HST Medium Deep Survey)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make a long exposure medium deep sky =
survey observations at latitudes larger than 10 degrees taken in parallel =
with the prime science observations. The observations were executed as =
scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 6189 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Internal =
Monitor - Vis Flats)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal visual flat calibration =
images. Both photometric and narrow-band filters were used. The =
observations were executed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.14 Completed WF/PC-2 6814 (The Nucleus and Stellar Populations of =
the DEN Galaxy NGC-5206)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make multi-colored observations of the =
nucleated dwarf elliptical (dEn) galaxy NGC-5206 in order to study its =
stellar populations and inner nucleus. Although the dEn class galaxies =
represents a considerable fraction of the dE class of galaxies, not much =
is known about the nucleus of these galaxies or the mechanism that allows =
the formation of such nuclei. The observations were completed as =
planned, and no problems were reported.

1.15 WF/PC-2 6658 (Intergalactic Stars in the Virgo Cluster)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make deep imaging observations of a blank =
field within the Virgo galactic cluster to look for possible =
intergalactic stars. These data will be searched for individual red =
branch (RGB) stars, which should stand out against the background faint =
galaxies. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems =
were reported.

1.16 Completed WF/PC-2 6099 (Black Holes and Cores of Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to search for possible black hole in the =
cores of nearby early-type galaxy NGC-3608. The WF/PC-2 will be used to =
obtain high resolution images of this galaxy to examine its bright cores, =
and to provide sufficiently accurate coordinates for the FOS, which will =
be used to measure the velocity dispersion around selected galaxies. The =
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.17 Completed WF/PC-2 6579 (The Cosmic Velocity of the Great =
Attractor)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxy NGC-4767 =
which is located in the Centaurus Cluster. The objective is to measure =
its distance, using the "surface brightness fluctuation " method. When =
combined with the radial velocity, these measurements will allow the =
investigator to determine whether the Centaurus Cluster is falling in to =
the Great Attractor. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no =
anomalies were noted.

1.18 Completed WF/PC-2 5949 (High Resolution Imaging of Galaxies =
Responsible for QSO Lyman Alpha Absorption.)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make high resolution observations of Field =
1357 in order to study galaxies which are responsible for intermediate =
redshift QSO Lyman Alpha absorption. It is the extended gaseous region =
around these galaxies that produces the absorption. The observations =
were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.
