DAILY REPORT #1688

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 08/01/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 08/02/96

Daily Status Report as of 215/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed FOS/RD 6725 (Io's SO2 Atmosphere: Patchy or Not)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make =
spatially resolved, both visually and ultravioletly, spectrographic =
observations of Jupiter's moon Io in order to study the SO2 in its =
atmosphere. The observations will determine whether the area around the =
large volcano Pele is a true unusual surface layer or just the observed =
peculiarities produced by a volcanic plum that is in the line of sight. =
The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.2 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6188 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: =
Dark)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal dark calibration images. =
The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were =
reported.

1.3 Completed FOS/RD 6595 (Does Pluto Have a Haze Layer?)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make =
spectrographic observations of the planet Pluto in order to determine if =
the planet has a haze layer. These observations were made during a =
series of stellar occultations. The objective is to study the physical =
structure of the atmosphere at kilometer-level spatial resolution. The =
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 6906 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Internal =
Monitor-Visual Flats)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal calibration visual flat =
images as part of the Cycle 6 internal monitoring of the instrument's =
operations. This proposal defines the standard series of internal flat =
fields, which will be executed twice per month. The observations were =
completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.5 Completed FOS(RD) 6094 (Kinematics of Nuclear Gas Disks in Nearby =
Radio Galaxies)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make =
observations of the nearby radio galaxy NGC-4374 (aka, M-84 and 3C272.1) =
in order to study the kinematics of its nuclear gas disk and to look for =
a black hole. Ground based observational data show that a nuclear disk =
of ionized gas exists. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. =
The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were =
reported.
