HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE

DAILY REPORT #1601

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 03/28/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 03/29/96

Daily Status Report as of 089/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed FOS/RD 6167 (FOS Cycle 5: Dark Monitoring)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make several =
dark calibration images. All exposures were internals. All spectra was =
done in the image mode. The observations were completed as planned, and n=
o problems were reported.

1.2 Completed FOS/RD 6165 (FOS Cycle 5: Discriminator Test)

This is a calibration proposal, which is being used to verify the =
optimal discriminator settings for the FOS. The observations were =
executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.3 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6363 (The Environments and Host =
Galaxies of BL-Lac Objects)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of =
BL-Lac objects PKS0426-38 and MS1312.1-4 in order to study their =
environment and their host galaxies. The goal is to investigate =
systematic trends in host galaxy type, unusual morphological features, =
nearby companion galaxies, etc. The observations were executed as =
scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 5983 (Curcumstellar Disks in Young Nebulous =
Clusters)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the young nearby =
nebulous cluster NGC-2264 looking for possible curcumstellar disks (Solar =
nebula analogs), like the type seen in the Orion Nebula. The =
observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 6346 (Snapshot Survey of the Ultraluminous IRAS =
Galaxy Sample-Part 1 High)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of the =
ultraluminous IRAS galaxy QDOTULIR18. These data will be searched for =
multiple cores, which imply a merger has occurred, and for starburst =
regions. The FGS acquisition for this proposal defaulted to guidance on =
FGS #3 only at 088/073646Z. HSTAR 5551 documented the event. Otherwise, =
the observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6184 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Photometric Calibration =
Monitor UV/OPT STD)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet and optical observations =
of standard star GRW+70D582 in order to monitor the photometric =
calibrations of the camera and to check for decontamination. The =
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 5997 (The Cores of Elliptical Galaxies in the =
Coma Cluster)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the large elliptical =
galaxy NGC-4906 which is located in the Coma Cluster. The purpose is to =
study the luminosity profiles in the central nuclear region. The =
observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.8 Completed FOS/RD 6089 (Eclipse Mapping and Tomography of the UV =
Emitting Region of DQ Her)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make Rapid Mod=
e ultraviolet observations of the eclipsing binary star 14Aur-C in order =
to do eclipse mapping and tomographic studies. Observations were made of =
both the ultraviolet continuum and emission lines. The observations were =
executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6102 (Chemical Evolution and History of Star =
Formation in the Large Magallanic Cloud)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the "Bar" region in =
the Large Magellanic cloud to study the chemical evolution and the =
history of star formation in that region. The goal is to observe =
individual field stars near the main sequence turnoff in order to study =
the large scale process that control star formation and nucleosynthesis =
in galaxies. The observations were executed as planned, and no anomalies =
were reported.
