DAILY REPORT #1747

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 10/25/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 10/28/96

Daily Status Report as of 302/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6906 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Internal =
Monitor-Visual Flats)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal calibration visual flat =
images as part of the Cycle 6 internal monitoring of the instrument's =
operations. This proposal defines the standard series of internal flat =
fields, which will be executed twice per month. The observations were =
completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 6344 (Low - Mass Binaries in the Hyades - =
Completing the Survey)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the low mass binary =
star RHY346 (M-Class Dwarf Stars) which is located in the Hyades Cluster. =
The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 6733 (Spatially Resolved Mapping of Titan's =
Atmosphere )

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations at several different =
wavelengths of the atmosphere on Saturn's largest moon Titan as part of a =
spatially resolved mapping program. Methane gas and organic aerosols are =
the major contributor to the atmospheres opacity. The observations were =
completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.3 Completed 6909 (Calibration: Earth Flats)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the bright earth to =
obtain streak flats which are used to construct high quality flat fields =
for the WF/PC-2 filter set. At 299/1839z both FHST #2 and FHST#3 shutters =
closed at the MAP start. The MAPs failed, but no DF224 error were =
reported. The previous FHST (2,3) roll delay update was successful. Also =
at 300/1259Z a Status Buffer error message Type 410 was received. The STR =
started with a sciece data flow instead of the PIT STR function. HSTARs =
5156 and 5159 were written. No other anomalies were noted.

1.5 Completed GHRS/2 6615 (Fundamental Parameters of White Dwarfs in =
Close Binaries)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make =
spectrographic observations of the close binary system EUVE-J0720 (a =
white dwarf/M-dwarf binary system) in order to obtain fundamental =
parameters of its white dwarf star. As the older star ages through the =
asymptotic branch phase, the gaseous envelope which compasses both stars =
dissipates and the white dwarf becomes visible. A wavelength calibration =
image was also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no =
anomalies were noted.

1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6352 (Dwarf Eliptical Galaxy Snapshots)

The WF/PC-2 was used to survey FCC316, from a sample of 30 dwarf =
eliptical galaxies. The observations were completed as planned, and no =
anomalies were reported.

1.7 Completed FOS/RD 7204 (Pre-Perihelion Observations of the =
International Rosetta Mission Target)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make =
pre-perihelion, ultraviolet, spectrographic observations Comet Wirtanen =
(aka, comet 46/P) as part of a target viewing for the International =
Rosetta Mission which is scheduled to be launched in the year 2003. AT =
299/1744Z there was a Loss-of-Lock prior to the FOS Target Acquisition. =
FGS #1 and #3 lost Fine Lock after a successful acquisition. The =
Take-Data -Flag was down at the start of the FOS Target Acquisition. =
HSTAR 5158 was written. No other anomalies were reported.

1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6194 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5: Polarization Proposal)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make polarization observations of star BD+64D106 =
at for different spacecraft role angles. This should permit a detailed =
and independent calibration of each polarizer quads. The observations =
were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6345 (Determining the Binary Frequency for =
Ultra-Cool, Nearby M Dwarf Stars)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of ultra-cool, nearby, M =
class dwarf star LHS2065 to determine the frequency for it being a binary =
system and try to detect stellar and sub-stellar companions. At 299/2015Z =
there was a guide star loss-of lock during a T3 slew with a FGS #1 =
Selector Comp. Error B Out-of-Limit. The auto-reacquisition was =
successful, and no science data appeared to be lost. HSTAR 5155 was =
written. No other anomalies were noted.

1.10 Completed FOS/BL 6242 (Binaries in Globular Clusters (FOS 37): =
Time-Resolved Spectra)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make rapid =
mode spectrographic observations of the X-ray burst binary source located =
in the globular cluster NGC-6624. Simultaneously X-ray observations will =
be obtained using the XTE satellite. The orbital period of the X-ray =
binary system is thought to be 11 minutes. The observations were executed =
as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.11 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive =
Program)

The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking =
ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science =
observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with =
flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. =
The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were =
reported.

1.12 Completed WF/P-2 6254 (GTO Pure Parallel Program - Cycle 5)

The WF/PC-2 was use to make random long exposures of high galactic =
fields taken in parallel with the prime science observations to obtain a =
random sample of galaxies. The observations were executed as scheduled, =
and no anomalies were noted.

1.13 Completed Two sets of WF/PC-2 6756 (Measuring Proper Motions of =
Galactic Microlenses)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make astrometric proper motion =
measurements of STAR-1804 and STAR 1807 as part of a study of galactic =
microlensing. This is an epoch image of a recently discovered =
microlensing event which is located near the galactic bulge. The =
observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported.

1.14 Completed Two sets of WF/PC-2 6354 (Measuring Luminosity =
Evolution in Z =3D 0.3 Field Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot observations of the galactic =
cluster Gal-Cluster-1 located at a distance of Z =3D 0.3.
The targets were drawn from a much larger pool of galaxies for which the =
internal kinematics have been measured from an extensive ground based =
program. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies =
were noted.

1.15 Completed FOS/BL 6498 (Accretion Steams in Magnetic Variables: =
FOS Eclipse Studies of 4 ROSAT)

The Faint Object Spectrograph ( Blue Side) was used to make Rapid =
Mode ultraviolet spectrographic observations of active binary system =
RXJ0515+01. These data should be particularly germane to the issue of =
inhomogenious accretion and the resulting effects on the hard/soft x-ray =
cyclotron balance and shock geometries in this complex, naked CV class =
object. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies =
were reported.

1.16 Completed GHRS/1 6723 (Physical Conditions Near High Galactic =
Latitude Molecular Clouds)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to make =
observations of background star HD89688 whose light passes through a high =
galactic molecular cloud. They are looking for complex interstellar line =
profiles of Na II, Ca II and K. At 301/0015Z FGS #1 servo saturated. =
There was a FGS#1 Star Selector Comp. Error B Out-of-Limits. HSTAR 5160 =
was written. No other problems were reported.

1.17 Completed FOS/BL 6624 (Time-Resolved Spectrophotmetry of the =
Smallest Mass Function Binaries)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue side) was used to make time resolved, =
period mode, spectrographic observations of a low mass, x-ray, binary =
star system KX Tri. The observations covered an entire orbital period, =
but not one orbit. An internal calibration image was also taken. The =
observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted.
