DAILY REPORT #1762

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 11/18/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 11/19/96

Daily Status Report as of 324/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6906 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Internal =
Monitor-Visual Flats)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal calibration visual flat =
images as part of the Cycle 6 internal monitoring of the instrument's =
operations. This proposal defines the standard series of internal flat =
fields, which will be executed twice per month. The observations were =
completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.2 Completed GHRS/1 6828 (Far UV Emission Spectrum and Stellar Winds =
of Sirius A and Vega)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to make far =
ultraviolet observations of the star Sirius (aka, HD48915) and Sirius-B. =
The proposal text indicated the the Cycle #1 spectra reviealed unexpected =
presence of emission lines and a slight stellar wind. During the =
execution of this proposal, at 323/023044Z, a status buffer message was =
received indicating that the maximum number of iterative X-null balancing =
during a target acquisition was exceeded. This event was recorded in =
HSTAR 5800. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no =
anomalies were noted.

1.3 Completed FOS/RD 6912 (FOS Cycle 6: Dark Monitoring)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make =
measurements of the internal background. All exposures were internals, =
and the spectrographic observations were made in the image mode. The =
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.4 Completed GHRS/1 6723 (Physical Conditions Near High Galactic =
Latitude Molecular Clouds)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to make =
observations of background star HD298497 whose light passes through a =
high galactic molecular cloud. They are looking for complex interstellar =
line profiles of Na II, Ca II and K. The observations were completed as =
planned, and no problems were reported.

1.5 Completed GHRS/1 6544 (Dwarf Novae in Quiescence)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to make =
moderate resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio spectrographic observation=
s of the dwarf, quiescent nova WX-Hyi. The intent is to study the =
accretion disk in the system in order to determine if x-ray =
photoionization of the disk produces the ultraviolet lines and the =
underlying continuum. The observations were completed as planned and no =
problems were reported.

1.6 Completed GHRS/1 6897 (Cycle 6: Condensed-Regimen Integrated =
Monitoring Program for Side One of the GHRS)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to used to =
perform a Condensed-Reigman Integrated Monitoring Calibration. This =
proposal combines into one program several aspects of instrument =
monitoring that ordinarily execute at the same frequency of two times per =
year. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The observations =
were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.
