DAILY REPORT #1873

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 05/07/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 05/08/97

Daily Status Report as of 128/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 7594 (Observations of Comet Spacewatch (1996 BA6))

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of Comet 1996-BA6 as part
of the Comet Spacewatch Program. This recently discovered comet is on a
very odd orbit, highly inclined and eccentric, with a perihelion in the
asteroid belt. The observation were executed as schedule, and no anomalies
were noted.

1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 6905 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Internal Monitor)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal calibrations
observations including biases and internal flats as part of a Cycle 6
calibrations procedure. A variety of internal exposures are run weekly to
verify and monitor the health of the camera. The observations were
executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 6625 (The Second-Parameter Effect and the
Formation History of the Milky Way Galaxy)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of globular cluster
NGC-2298 in order to study the second-parameter effect and formation
history of the Milky Way Galaxy. Observations were made of this galactic
globular cluster in order to establish an unbiased correlation between the
morphology of the horizontal branch, the age of the cluster for a fixed
metallicity. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies
were reported.

1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 6346 (Snapshot Survey of the Ultraluminous IRAS
Galaxy Sample-Part 1 High)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of the
ultraluminous IRAS galaxies CL-ULIR000 and QDOTULIR15. These data will be
searched for multiple cores, which imply a merger has occurred, and for
starburst regions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no
anomalies were noted.

1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 6363 (The Environments and Host Galaxies of BL-Lac
Objects)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of BL-Lac
object 1ES1440+12 in order to study its environment and its host galaxy.
The goal is to investigate systematic trends in host galaxy type, unusual
morphological features, nearby companion galaxies, etc. The observations
were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.6 Completed STIS/CCD 7063 (STIS SMOV CCD Contamination Monitor)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph CCD was used to make
observations of standard star GD153 in order to measure flux and look for
any gross changes over time that might indicate contamination. The
observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported.

1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6802 (Cosmology With the Medium Deep Survey)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations taken in parallel with the
prime science observations as part of the Medium Deep Sky Survey. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no problems were reported.

1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6909 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Earth Flats

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the bright Earth to
obtain streak flats which are used to construct high quality flat fields
for the WF/PC-2 filter set. The observations were executed as scheduled,
and no anomalies were noted.

1.9 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6194 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5: Polarization
Proposal)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make polarization observations of star
BD+64D106 at for different spacecraft roll angles. This should permit a
detailed and independent calibration of each of the polarizer quads. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.10 Completed STIS/MA2/S/C 7105 (STIS MAMA Turn-on)

The STIS/MAMA 2 high voltage was successfully turned on at
127/1400Z. This was the first high-voltage ramp-up of the far-ultraviolet
and near-ultraviolet MAMA detectors. As documented in HSTAR 6054, however,
MAMA 2 turned off at 127/145956Z, earlier than expected, when status buffer
messages were received stating that the MCE2 voltage monitor read HVOFF and
that the event threshhold monitor was exceeded. A timetag image was in
progress. No further anomalies were noted.

1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 6598 (The Reddest Objects in The Universe)

The WF/PC-02 was used to make observations of the object ERO1645+46
which is known to be one of the reddest objects in the universe. This is
one of the members of a recent deep K-Band imaging surveys which discovered
a new population of infrared bright, extremely red (R-K~gt 6 class),
objects (EROS). The observations were completed as scheduled, and no
anomalies were reported.

2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY:

2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions:

Scheduled Acquisitions : 11
Successful : 11
Scheduled Reacquisitions : 4
Successful : 4

2.2 FHST Updates:

Scheduled : 20
Successful : 20

2.3 Operations Notes:

As noted in 1.10, the MAMA 2 high voltage was turned on at
127/1400Z, but turned off unexpectedly early (at 127/1459Z). HSTAR 6054
was written. An EDAC dump was performed at 127/1906Z.

The battery #5 capacity check is ongoing. Solar array section 5 was
connected to battery #5 at 127/1206Z.

The RGAs were restored to low mode at 127/2321Z.

The MCE error log was dumped at 127/2136Z.
