1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed Thirteen Sets of STIS/CCD 7948 (CCD Dark and Bias Monitor
-- Cont. to Dec. 98)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to measure
CCD dark current and bias rates for the two supported amplifier settings
{GAIN=1 and GAIN=4} in order to gather data for making superdarks and
superbiases. The data will be used to track the growth of hot pixels on
the CCD in general and within the various target acquisition apertures
specifically. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no
anomalies were noted.

1.2 Completed Eighteen Sets of WF/PC-2 7713 (WF/P-2 Cycle 7 Supplemental
Darks pt3/3)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make supplemental dark calibration images.
This dark calibration program obtains three dark frames every day to
provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels.
The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted.

1.3 Completed Eighty Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7963 (Darks: Warming Up)

The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used to
monitor the detector dark current during the interval between the end of
science observations and the exhaustion of cryogen and subsequent warming
of the dewar to > 100K. Near the beginning of the 27th iteration of this
proposal, as described in 2.1 and HSTAR 6828, the NICMOS instrument entered
a suspend state. It remained in that state through the 28th, 29th and 30th
iteration. Then, during the 50th iteration of this proposal, the guide
star acquisitionb failure described in 2.1 and HSTAR 6833 occurred, and the
take data flag remained down. Otherwise, the observations were completed
as planned, and no further anomalies were noted.

1.4 Completed Thirteen Sets of STIS/CCD 8084 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS
Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make
non-scripted parallel high galactic latitude observations as part of POMS
test proposal. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no
anomalies were noted.

1.5 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 6357 (The Nuclear Morphology of
Elliptical Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of the early type, large,
elliptical galaxy NGC-3078 (taken from a list of 150 galaxies) in order to
study its nuclear morphology. This survey will complement Illingworth's
snapshot study of later Hubble types. The observations were completed as
scheduled, and no anomalies were reported.

1.6 Completed Fifteen Sets of STIS/CCD 8062 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS
Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make high
galactic latitude observations taken in parallel with the prime science
observations. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems
were reported.

1.7 Completed STIS/CCD/MA1/MA2 7389 (Chromospheres and Transition Layers
in Hyades and Pleiades F stars)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD, MA1 and MA2) was used
to make observations of the F class star HD28237 which is located in the
Hyades star cluster. This proposal seeks to obtain additional empirical
constraints on the heating mechanisms for stellar chromospheres, transition
layers and coronae. A wavelenth calibration obseration was also taken.
The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.8 Completed Twenty-Four Sets of NIC/1/2/3 8083 (FLATs: Warming Up -
continuation)

The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used to
monitor the flat fields during the interval between the end of science
observations and the exhaustion of cryogen and subsequent warming of the
dewar to > 100K. For the 6th iteration of this proposal, the NICMOS
instrument was in suspend. Otherwisw, the observations were executed as
scheduled, and no further anomalies were noted.

1.9 Completed Eight Sets of WF/PC-2 8061 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-II
Backup Parallel Archive Proposal)

This is a POMS test proposal designed to simulate scientific plans.
The proposal was executed as planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.10 Completed STIS/CCD 7396 UV Cyclotron Spectroscopy of the High-
Field Polar UZ Fornacis

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make
ultraviolet cyclotron spectroscopy observations of variable star UZ-For.
This is a high magnetic field star (i.e., 53 Mega Gauss). The observations
were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.11 Completed FOC/96 6350 (FOC spectroscopy of BALQSOs)

The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make ultraviolet
spectrographic images of BALQSO 0025-0151 which is known to show broad
emission lines from abundant ions. This will help us improve our knowledge
of these BAL class objects. The observations were executed as scheduled,
and no anomalies were noted.

1.12 Completed STIS/CCD/MA1 7732 (Extreme UV Stars in Omega Cen. CY 7
Extension)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD and MA1) was used to
make ultraviolet observations the globular cluster NGC-5139 (a.k.a., Omega
Cen.). Far-ultraviolet imaging of the globular cluster Omega Centauri with
the ASTRO-1 Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope has identified a large sample of
hot stars in advanced evolutionary phases. The observations were executed
as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.13 Completed Five Sets of WF/PC-2 7909 (POMS Test Proposal: WF II
Parallel Archive Proposal)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make parallel observations as part of the
POMS test proposal. This test proposal is designed to simulate scientific
plans. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were
reported.

1.14 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD/MA1 7270 (The Origin of Highly
Ionized Gas in the Milky Way and Its Relationship To Large Galactic
Structures)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD and MA1) was used to
make spectrographic observations of the stars HD218915 and HD104705 in
order to study the origin of highly ionized gas in the Milky Way and its
relationship to large galactic structures. A wavelength calibration image
was also taken. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no
anomalies were reported.

1.15 Completed Six Sets of NIC/2/3 8082 (NICMOS Pure Parallel Fall 98)

The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras Two and Three) was used to make
pure parallel observations while another instrument is prime. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.16 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 6659 (A Search For Superplanets
Around Weak T- Tauri Stars)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations in the 1 micron band of
the T-Tauri class stars V827- Tau, HBC376 and SU-Aur in order to search for
superplanets. Weak T-Tauri class stars are thought to have dissipated
their circumstellar disks recently, possibly by forming planetary systems.
During the first iteration of this proposal, the guide star acquisitionb
failure described in 2.1 and HSTAR 6833 occurred, and the take data flag
remained down. Otherwise, the observations were completed as planned, and
no further anomalies were reported.

1.17 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 7310 (The Interaction of Accretion
Disks with Protostellar Binaries)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to study the
interaction of the accretion disk with the protostellar binary systems
LKHA332 and UY-Aur. This should determine how the accretion disk interacts
with stars in young binary systems and will measure the rates that mass
accumulates onto each component of the pair. The observations were
executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.18 Completed WF/PC-2 6581 (Morphology and Photometry of Galaxies in
Optically Selected High Redshift Clusters)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galactic cluster
Gal-Clus-1736 in order to make photometric observations and to study its
morphology. The high angular resolution imagery of HST, combined with our
extensive ground based u, v, B, g, V, R, I and z photometry and
spectroscopy, will allow the measurement of the morphological fractions in
distant clusters as functions of redshift, color, spectral features, galaxy
density, and global cluster properties such as core radius and ellipticity.
The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were
reported.

1.19 Completed WF/PC-2 7622 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Internal Monitor)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make a set of Cycle 7 internal monitoring
calibration measurements. A variety of internal exposures are obtained in
order to provide a monitor of the integrity of the CCD camera electronics
in both bays {gain 7 and gain 15}, a test for quantum efficiency in the
CCDs, and a monitor for possible buildup of contaminants on the CCD
windows. A bias calibration and an internal flat calibration image were
also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies
were noted.

1.20 Completed WF/PC-2 7282 (A Continuing Snapshot Survey for Compact
Stellar Groups and Clusters around Wolf-Rayet Stars)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the Wolf-Rayet star
WR30 as part of a continuing snapshot survey of compact stellar groups and
clusters. The newly imaged clusters allow us to accurately determine the
distances, luminosities, and ages of the WR members. The observations were
executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.21 Completed STIS/CCD 7358 (The Unusual Absorption Line System of
PG2302+029 -- Ejected or Intervening?)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the unusual absorption
line systems PG2302+029 to help to identify the cause of this absorption
system and allow us to determine whether the system is an extreme example
of previously known classes of quasar absorption lines or represents an
entirely new phenomenon. The observations were completed as scheduled, and
no anomalies were reported.

1.22 Completed WF/PC-2 6354 (Measuring Luminosity Evolution in Z = 0.3
Field Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot observations of the galactic
cluster Gal-Cluster-0673 located at a distance of Z = 0.3. The targets
were drawn from a much larger pool of galaxies for which the internal
kinematics have been measured from an extensive ground based program. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.23 Completed WF/PC-2 6355 (A UV Atlas of Nearby Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet observations of the nearby
galaxy NGC-0520. The aim of the project is to build a reference
ultraviolet atlas of galaxies whose optical images are well known, with the
highest possible degree of information, covering all the morphological
types and luminosity classes. The observations were executed as scheduled,
and no anomalies were noted.

1.24 Completed Six Sets of WF/PC-2 6967 (Blue Continuum Snapshots of 3CR
Radio - Continued Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the radio galaxies
3C71.0, 3C300.0 and 3C334.0. Radio galaxies are an important class of
extragalactic objects: they represent one of the most energetic
astrophysical phenomena; they may be used as probes of their environments;
and they are unique probes of the early Universe. The observations were
completed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.25 Completed WF/PC-2 6673 (Black Holes and Gas Disks in a Complete
Sample of Radio Loud UGC Ellipticals)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of radio load, elliptical
galaxy UGC-06635 in order to search for a possible black hole and a gas
disk. Hydrogen-Alpha and broad band observations were taken to determine
the luminosity profiles and stellar populations (on the tens of parsec
scale), and detect nuclear regions or disks of gas and dust. The
observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.26 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 7361 (The Nature of Nuclear Activity
in Nearby Galaxies)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make
observations of the nuclear regions of galaxies N4380 and N3351. The high
resolution spectra will be used to search for broad components in H-Alpha
and for velocity gradients, indicative of gas rotation or other ordered
motions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies
were noted.

1.27 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6844 (M87 Globular Clusters {#6746
Parallel Field Follow-up })

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the globular clusters
which are located on the "south" end of galaxy M-87. Sub-arcsecond
dithering was employed to reduce the effect of undersampling of the point
spread function. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no
anomalies were noted.

1.28 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6562 (Shock Waves and Momentum
Transfer in the Young Stellar Outflow Cepheus A)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations to study the shock
emission waves and momentum transfer in the young stellar outflow of
Cepheus A. Together, the radio, infrared, and optical emission line images
of Cepheus A enable us to observe how winds from massive stars create
bubbles in the ISM, and the new observations will clarify how shock waves
in these highly supersonic flows transfer momentum and energy to their
environments. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems
were reported.

1.29 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 7377 (Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy
Snapshot Survey II)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the dwarf elliptical
galaxies FCC218, FCC238, VCC996 and VCC1077 as part of Snapshot Survey II.
This survey will provide important information on the globular cluster
systems of such galaxies and the properties of their cores and nuclei. The
observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.30 Completed Two Sets NIC/2/3 7962 (NICMOS Warm-up Focus Monitoring)

The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras Two and Three) was used to make
observations of the globular cluster and nebula of NGC-3603 as part of the
NICMOS warm-up focus monitoring. This proposal is used to determine and
monitor the optimal focus settings for NIC/2 and NIC/3 during the dewar
warm-up period at the end of 1998. The observations were executed as
scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.31 Completed STIS/MA2 7359 (Chemical Abundances in QSO Broad
Absorption Line Regions)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA2) was used to make
observations of the quasar Q2208-1720 in order to study the chemical
abundances in the QSO's broad absorption line regions. These observations
are designed to test the possible models for high metallicity in BALQSOs
and, indirectly, test the origins of the BAL phenomenon. A wavelength
calibration image was also taken. The observations were completed as
planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.32 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6825 (Quantitative Measures of the
Evolution of the Cluster Galaxy Population)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of galaxies MS00016+16B
and MS00016+16C. The goal of this proposal is to understand the
differential evolution of cluster and field galaxies over the redshift
range 0.3 < Z < 0.6. A wave length calibration image was also taken. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.33 Completed STIS/MA1 7298 (A Snapshot Survey for UV bright Quasars at
redshift below 3)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1) was used to make
ultraviolet snapshot observations of the bright quasar KUV1418+22 which
has a redshift (Z) below 3.0. The goal is to find quasars bright enough in
the ultraviolet for spectroscopic follow-up in the range of 900-1200
Angstroms. A wave length calibration image was also taken. The
observation were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported.

1.34 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6754 (Imaging of the HH 30
Circumstellar Disk and Jets)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the disk and jets of
the Herbig-Harrow Object HH-30. Recent Hubble Space Telescope images have
revealed HH-30 to be a prototype young stellar object system possessing an
optically thick circumstellar absorption disk extended perpendicular to
highly collimated bipolar jets. The observations were executed as
scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.35 Completed Three Sets of STIS/CCD 8080 (STIS Spectroscopic CCD
Flatfielding -- Revised)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make CCD
flat fielding calibration observations in the spectroscopic mode. The
observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.36 Completed STIS/CCD/MA1/MA2 7301 (Studies of the Characteristics of
the Interstellar Medium in the Carina Nebula)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD, and MAs #1 and #2)
was used to make observations of the star HD93222 which is located in the
Carina Nebula. It is proposed to carry out high-resolution ultraviolet
spectroscopic observations of interstellar lines in the spectra of OB stars
in the Carina Nebula, which will provide unique data on the interstellar
medium associated with star cluster formation. A wavelength calibration
image was also taken. The observations were completed as planned, and no
anomalies were noted.

1.37 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 7620 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Standard Darks)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of Cycle 7 standard dark
calibration images. This dark calibration program obtains dark frames
every week in order to provide data for the ongoing calibration of the CCD
dark current rate, and to monitor and characterize the evolution of hot
pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were
noted.

1.38 Completed Four Sets of STIS/MA1 7950 (Cycle 7 MAMA Dark Measurements)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1) was used to make a
dark calibration image. This is to establish if the detectors are
performing nominally, that no internal movement of the MCP has taken place,
and establish dark level in orbit for a given operating temperature. These
darks will be used in later image reduction and also trended over
instrument life time as indicators of detector degradation or damage. The
observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.39 Completed Ten Sets of STIS/CCD 8091 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS
Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation III)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make high
galactic latitude, non-scripted, parallel observations. The observations
were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted.

1.40 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 7387 (T-Tauri Star Snapshot Survey)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the stars DN-Tau,
UZ-Tau and GO-Tau as part of a T-Tauri class star survey. The observations
were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.41 Completed STIS/CCD/MA1/MA2 7269 (The 1997/98 Eclipse of VV Cephei)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD, MA1 and MA2) was used
to make ultraviolet spectrographic observations of the long-period
eclipsing binary star HD208816 (a.k.a., VV-Cephei). This eclipse will
provide an unprecedented opportunity to obtain spatially resolved
information about the density, ionization and velocity structure in the
outer atmosphere of the M supergiant primary. A wave length calibration
observation was also taken. The observations were completed as scheduled
with no anomalies.

1.42 Completed WF/PC-2 8090 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-II parallel archive
proposal continuation)

The WF/PC-2 was used in the parallel mode to make some low galactic
latitude archive observations. The program will be used to take parallel
images of random areas of the sky. The observations executed as scheduled
with no anomalies.

1.43 Completed WF/PC-2 6554 (Extragalactic Globular Cluster Systems)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of a extragalactic
globular cluster system which is located in galaxy NGC-524. This is part
of a survey which will cover a range in galaxy luminosity, morphological
type, environment, galactic cluster specific frequency and Galactic
cluster mean metallicity. The observations were executed as scheduled, and
no anomalies were noted.

1.44 Completed WF/PC-2 6632 (Morphologies of High Redshifted Radio Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the high redshifted
radio galaxy Gal-1140-2 in order to study its morphology. This is part of
a study of the continuum and Lyman-Alpha morphologies of 20 high redshifted
radio galaxies which was begun in Cycle 5. The observations were completed
as planned, and no problems were reported.

2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY

2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions:

As documented in HSTAR 6833, the acquisition scheduled for 361/1430Z
failed when the search radius limit was exceeded on FGS-3. The proposals
described in 1.3 and 1.16 were affected.

2.2 FHST Updates:

Scheduled : 115
Successful : 114

Per HSTAR 6827, the FHST-2 and -3 update scheduled for 358/1714Z
failed. The subsequent full maneuver update was successful.

2.3 Operations Notes:

Using ROP SR-1, the SSR EDAC error counter was cleared 23 times.

NICMOS suspended at 358/1800Z as the instrument was transitioning
from operate to observe. NICMOS status buffer message 104 was issued.
HSTAR 6828 was written. Per ROP NS-9, the NICMOS memory was dumped.
NICMOS was recovered at 359/0117Z as directed by an operations request.
Proposals described in 1.3 and 1.8 did not execute due to the suspend.

At 359/0916Z, the UPS failed the bypass mode and all STOCC power was
lost. There was no commanding or telemetry activitiy for approximately one
hour, 35 minutes. All equipment was restored by Monday except CCS string
"A" archive. A TTR was written.

As documented in HSTAR 6829, the STIS MCE-2 reset at 359/1449Z while
the low voltage was on and while outside an SAA interval. MAMA-2 was
successfully recovered at the time the SMS commanded the high voltage on.

As documented in HSTAR 6830, the STIS MCE-1 reset at 360/0137Z while
the low voltage was on and while inside an SAA interval. MAMA-1 was
successfully recovered at the time the SMS commanded the high voltage on.

There was a NICMOS EDAC single bit error at 361/1127Z. HSTAR 6832
was written. The ground system limit was accordingly adjusted.

There was another NICMOS EDAC single bit error at 363/0647Z,
followed by another at 363/0655Z. HSTAR 6834 was written. The ground
system limit was again adjusted.

The latest NICMOS plots imply that the "end of coolant life" is
imminent. Warm-up rates have increased by a factor of four over the last
few days. A review of the capillary line temperature shows the external
environment has been relatively stable and cool (~2C) recently, implying
that all temperature changes observed inside the dewar are due to ice
recession.

Due to the holidays, the next HST Daily Report will be issued on
Monday, January 4, 1999.

3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS:

Continuation of normal science observations and calibrations.
