VISITING THE INSTITUTE
We highly recommend that all HST Observers, especially first-time
General Observers (GOs), visit the Institute if possible in order
to take full advantage of the advice and expertise offered by STScI.
Such a visit provides the GO with the latest information concerning
HST data reduction and analysis.
All GOs and funded Archive Researchers will have a Contact Scientist
from the appropriate Instrument Group assigned to them. In preparation
for a visit, the Instrument Group will ascertain the GO's needs and
goals, load the GO's data into a temporary computer account, verify
that all the hardware and software are functioning properly, and check
the quality of the GO's data. This preparation allows the Instrument
Group to anticipate possible issues or additional needs. Due to the
time required for this task, we kindly ask that GO's give us notice a
MONTH or so in advance of their visit by sending
an e-mail message to their Contact Scientist. If you don't remember
who your Contact Scientist is, or you don't have one, please send a
message to help@stsci.edu.
A typical GO visit lasts about 1 week, depending on the volume and
complexity of the data to be reduced. If the GO is unfamiliar with
IRAF, STSDAS, or HST data, we recommend a longer visit.
A Data Analyst will be available at all times for the duration of the
visit to provide the GO with tutorials in IRAF or STSDAS, if necessary,
and to teach the GO about Routine Science Data Processing (RSDP),
re-calibration, and post-reduction data analysis. A Contact Scientist
will also be available to provide scientific insight into the program
and to recommend methods for optimizing the analysis of the data.
During the visit, the GO also has access to the expertise offered by
other STScI staff.
Please send e-mail to your Contact Scientist to arrange a visit to the
Institute. If you don't remember who your Contact Scientist is, or you
don't have one, please send a message to
help@stsci.edu.
