STIS Cycle-20 Calibration Phase-1 Template

Last Revised: 31/08/2012
Proposal ID: 13135
Title: STIS CCD Spectroscopic Flats
PI: Elena Mason
Co-I(s): Charles Proffitt

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Orbit estimates are TOTAL for all of cycle-20

Total Prime Orbits: 0
External Parallel Orbits: 0
Internals or no-impact orbits: 19
Comments on orbit estimate:
_ 9 orbits for G430M/5216/50CCD spread across the cycle
_ 10 orbits for G430M/512/52x2;

# This section should be written with a GO audience in mind -- use
# Calibration plans in WFPC-2 handbook as a guide.

Purpose:

Obtain MR grating flats to determine the pixel-to-pixel variation for
spectroscopic observations and produce the cycle 20 reference p-flat
(m and l modes).

The program is identical to MR grating visits of cycle 18 program
12766 executed during cycle 19. With respect to the previous cycle 18
orbits using LR gratins have been dropped: the time variation of the
dust motes are expected to be sufficiently slow that an yearly
monitoring is not necessary.

Description:

We will use the tungsten lamp and the MR grating G430M to determine
the pixel-to-pixel variation of the STIS CCD in spectroscopic mode.
The flat exposures will be taken with the apertures 50CCD and 52x2 at
5 offset positions in order to map -with a sufficient SNR- the whole
sensitive area of the detector. The expected signal is >=1.4E6
ADU/pixels; while the expected accuracy will be <=1.5%.

Accuracy: <= 1.5%
Comments on Accuracy: How well the spectroscopic science data can be
flattened.
Products: Reference files and ISR as applicable.

# Link to Cycle 20 Science
# Use the GO + GTO Phase 1 exposure listing and derived statistics
# posted on WWW.

Fraction of science programs supported by this calibration: 18% of
STIS total exposure time.

List categories of science which can't be executed until after this
proposal: None.

List categories of science which are best performed contemporaneous
with this proposal: High S/N CCD spectroscopy
why: For programs that need very high S/N, it would be best if the
epoch of the flats spans the observations. So the flat program should
be spread out over the whole cycle.

# Analysis Plan

Expected FTE weeks for analysis: 2.5
Required turnaround on analysis (weeks): 2.5
Data volume (Mb needed for analysis): ~2.8G
Special software needed for analysis? (Describe): existing python
script (or IDL script)

Description of analysis Plans: Do statistical analysis of data yearly
to check for any significant changes in pixel-to-pixel flats. Co-add
G430M flats after 8 weeks and then again at end of cycle to make new
pfl files.
