Outcome of 2012 Senior Review
ь AWG ranked Hubble in the top tier and passed the recommendation to the ESA/SSAC. ь SSAC deliberated that not extending ESA's involvement in Hubble would cause irreparable scientific damage. ь The final step - the Science Programme Committee (SPC) - November 15-16, followed by ministerial on November 20-21, where ESA's budget was decided for the following 5 yrs. ь the ministerial decided on a flat budget, with no inflation ==> an effective cut to the program:
. Approve the operations of Cassini-Huygens, Cluster, Hinode, HST, INTEGRAL, Mars Express, SOHO, Venus Express and XMM-Newton from 1 January 2013 to 31 December 2014, as foreseen by SPC in 2010 (ESA/SPC(2010)21);


What now?

ьGoing back to the SPC in June 2013, with a request for mission extension to 2015-2016, ьNecessary to show some cost savings, ьPossible reduction in ESA personnel at STScI from 15 to 13 - still negotiating.


ESA/HUBBLE
ьOutreach effort in Europe continues aggressively. ьOutreach contract in place till December 13, but already in the budget for future years, hopefully will not be cut. ьReady to send letter to successful Cycle 20 PIs making them aware that ESA/Hubble can help advertising their science. ьFor the 23 anniversary, Hubble made (for the first time in history) the main ESA portal, in a joint press release between Herschel and Hubble.
