STSDAS Version 3.10 Release Notes

    11 May 2009

This release of STSDAS contains changes to the pipeline code for all
the instruments (ACS, WFPC2, STIS, NICMOS, WFC3 and COS).

The specific changes are detailed in the following sections.

Platform Support ================ Binaries for this release were built
on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 and 4, Solaris 5.8, and Mac OS X 10.4
    (PPC and Intel architecture).
Binaries were built with IRAF 2.14, except for Solaris, which were
built with IRAF 2.12.2a. IRAF is available from http://iraf.net.

    =========

    ACS
    ---
CALACS has been updated to Version 5.0.5 to support ACS operations during SMOV and includes:
	- corrections to BLEVCORR to more robustly compute the correct mean and
standard deviation for data with a large number of bad pixels.
	- updates to ACSREJ to use the correct readnoise values for each amp
	- revisions to allow CALACS to quit gracefully if trailer file can't be
written out or when a non-existent file is given as input
	- support for reprocessing a product/sub-product if BLEVCORR has been
	     successfully completed.

    AXE
    ---
A new version of aXe, Version 1.71, has been included in this
release. Further information and documentation is available at the
    aXe pages:
	      http://www.stecf.org/software/slitless_software/axe/

Any questions regarding this software can be directed to:

    COS
    ---
CALCOS has been updated to Version 2.8a. The details can be found in the
release notes for the stsci_python package.

    NICMOS
    ------
CALNICB Version 2.6.2 correctly computes and reports the exposure time
related keywords (EXPSTART, EXPEND, EXPTIME) for the product and for
all sub-products when the association contains background exposures.

Changes were also made to the 'runcalsaa' task to correct for bright-earth
persistence and SAA effects. Specific details of those changes can be found
in the Release Notes for stsci_python V2.8.

    STIS
    -----
This release contains CALSTIS Version 2.27(12-December-2008).
The changes in this version include:
	- ignoring imsets (exposures) with zero exposure time in associations.
These imsets will be written to the output files without being
calibrated and will be ignored when combined.
	- fixing a problem with matching a saved background array with the data
	    after correcting for scattered light.

    WFPC2
    -----
This version of CALWP2, Version 2.5.5 corrects a problem with the
initialization of the PHOTMODE keyword value when running CALWP2
with GEIS files as input and adds applies ATOD and WF4T corrections
    to AREA mode data.

    WFC3
    ----
CALWF3 has been updated to Version 1.4.1 to support data taken during SMOV.
    It addresses numerous issues including:
	- L-FLAT (low-order flat) reference files can now be applied correctly
	- PHOTMODE now uses UVIS1, UVIS2, CAL keywords and does not include DN
	    for IR data
	- adding checks of FILETYPE and other applicable parameters such as
DETECTOR, GAIN, FILTER for all ref files
	- UVIS BLEVCORR now properly handles rejected overscan rows/cols
	- Fixes in the UVIS BLEVCORR routine so that it will no longer crash
when processing some amp B/D subarray images
	- Implementing the use of CRREJTAB in IR CRCORR to get rejection parameters
	- Fixes to the IR cridcalc routine to flag CRs in all samples
	    following the hit
	- Fixes in wf3ir/zsigcorr to compute the correct effective exposure
time of zeroth read subarray images.
	- Fixes in the wf3ir/flatcorr mult_gain routine to prevent out of
bounds array access for subarray images
	- a fix to no longer crash when there is no valid trailer file
	- Modifications to wf3rej/rej_loop to only write CR flag values
into outputs (no SPILL values) and to not flag pixels as CR in
output crj file if there were 1 or more good samples for the pixel
	- Modified wf3rej/rej_loop so that SPILL pixels get tested to see
if they qualify as a CR
	- Fixing many bugs in IR CRCORR, including computation of output
SAMP and TIME values, and also changed flagging of HIGH_CURVATURE
to UNSTABLE, and removed ZEROSIG flags from FLT file DQ array

    SYNPHOT
    =======
There are no changes to the SYNPHOT software in this release.

SYNPHOT users should be aware that we are presently developing
the pysynphot package as a successor to SYNPHOT. Pysynphot is a
re-implementation of the SYNPHOT functionality. It is not a simple
port into Python, but provides improved algorithms that address known
shortcomings in SYNPHOT. It does not require IRAF, and is suitable
for either library or interactive use.

An alpha version of pysynphot (v0.60) is included in this release that
provides much but not all of the core SYNPHOT functionality. Once the
core functionality is supported (presently planned for Spring 2010),
    SYNPHOT will be formally deprecated.

Additional details about pysynphot can be found in the release notes
    for the stsci_python package.
