Bright Object Alert Process
Bright Object Alerts (BOAs) are generated by NGSS during a guide star request. Any alerts returned are based on possible aperture positions when using any returned guide stars. IF NO GUIDE STARS ARE RETURNED IN THE SEARCH, NO BOAS WILL BE GENERATED. THIS DOES NOT MEAN THE OBSERVATION IS SAFE. Observations that are designed to execute with gyro guiding have a special guide star request file used only for finding bright objects (only in 3-
gyro operations). · BOAs are written into the PMDB immediately, with a timestamp. · Hourly crons copy BOAs into Assist, with a timestamp. · Each new guide star request generates new BOAs with the current timestamp. These are new records in the databases; old records are not overwritten. · The latest version of any BOA must be waived before a visit can be executed. · CS/IS reviews will automatically waive the latest alerts on spectrograph observations in Assist. · Currently, Denise or Bill J must manually waive BOAs on FGS or any imaging observations. · Daily crons copy new waivers from Assist to the PMDB, as does the SMSB calendar checklist tool. Because proposal processing, and especially re-
processing, can happen quickly, visits are frequently made flight ready before the hourly cron puts BOAs into Assist. Later, during calendar building, the alerts are found, but have no waivers. · SMSB sends email (currently to Denise, Bill J and Merle) requesting waivers for BOAs on scheduled visits. The email lists the affected obsets and alerting objects. · The investigating party (Denise or Bill J) can use the proposal history file, shared email folder, and the Procheck tool to determine if waivers can be set for the alerts. o If waivers can be set with no other input, the investigator uses the PC Toolbox/BOAs tool to set the needed waiver. o The investigator replies to the email from SMSB, informing all parties that the waivers have been set. o If waivers can not be set without other input, usually from INS, SMSB must be notified that further investigation is required and the affected obsets may need to be removed from the calendar. A PC may re-
process a visit that does not need a new CS/IS review before making the visit flight-
ready. But new BOAs may be generated during the guide star request. To waive those new BOAs on a spectrograph observation, use the PC Toolbox/Instrument Reviews tool to reset the timestamp on the CS/IS review, which will automatically set the waivers on the new BOAs. Denise or Bill J would still have to manually reset the waivers for FGS or imaging observations.
