Apple Remote Desktop Connection Instructions

Last modified: January 24, 2015 by Tony Roman
  1. If starting from inside of the STScI network, skip to step #3. If starting from outside of the STScI network, a VPN connection must first be established. Begin by using the VPN icon in the title bar of the Finder:

  2. Authenticate with STScI AD credentials:

  3. Choose a remote machine
  4. Open an Apple Remote Deskop (ARD) tunnel in the firwall
  5. Once the ARD tunnel is open, you then have 30 minutes in which to open one or more new ARD connections between your laptop and the remote machine. To do that, use the Go menu in the Finder:

  6. Enter the machine name in the Server Address field as shown below. If you want to remember the entry in your Favorite Servers list, use the plus (+) button. Once you have entered the machine name or selected it from your favorites, then click Connect.

  7. Use your SOGS or PPSIT AD credentials to authenticate on the selected machine.

  8. If you are the only person connected to the remote machine, then you will not see this next screen; but if someone else is already connected, then you will see the screen below. Be sure to select the Log In option on the right. Note that experience thus far has been that ARD works reliably when only one person is connected to the remote machine. When multiple people connect, ARD sometimes works well; but sometimes it fails to connect.

  9. At this point, you should be seeing exactly what you would see if you were physically sitting in front of the remote Mac. Proceed as you would expect. Once an ARD connection is established, it will remain active indefinitely.
