SMOV Status & Planning Meeting Minutes 03/28/97

SMOV Status & Planning Meeting Minutes

Meeting Date: 03/28/97

NOTE: THE NEXT MEETING IS MONDAY, MARCH 31, 8:30 AM.

STATUS REPORTS

1. Observatory Status - All subsystems nominal

In response to a question from Vicky Balzano regarding K-factor
	updates from the 7026 proposal, Linda Abramowicz-Reed responded that K1, K3 &
Kz factors will need updating and that there will be 2pm meeting on Monday to
discuss. Vicky and Linda will determine offline if the updated K-factors are
are prerequisite for the upcoming FGS-R guide star acq test. In the original
	plan, there were not.

2. WFPC2 Status - Proceeding nominally with Cycle 6 science and
	remaining SMOV monitors.

	John Biretta reported:

		- The 2.4-micron Secondary Mirror move on day 077 is confirmed
by phase retrievals on 6 subsequent observations of standard
stars, implying a SM focus postion of +1 micron. Encircled energies
also show improvement consistent with such a move.

		- UV measurements in the F170W filter continue to indicate a
post-SM2-to-pre-SM2 ratio of daily throughput loss of 1.4. This is
		down from ~ 1.8 in early SMOV2.

		- Following each decontamination procedure, throughput at all
wavelengths is completely restored, to within 1 or 2% uncertainty,
		to pre-SM2 values.

3. NICMOS Status

	- Engineering Status - John Troeltzsch reported that, during the fine alignment
test (7042), a total of 15 filter wheel motion "retries" (14 on FW2 out of a
total of 51 motions, and 1 on FW3) occurred overnight. All retries were
successful on the first attempt. Each retry involved typically only a couple
of steps out of a typical rotation of several hundred steps. (There are 60
steps between filters.) In subsequent visits involving flat fielding
and Camera 1 PAM tilts, no retries have been experienced. The ops request
for pre-postioning the filters to their fixed settings following this activity
is in place. This proposal is filter wheel intensive, but, as such,
is not unprecedented in SMOV (e.g., the 7035 FW Mech. Test and others involved
many FW rotations.) A retry during the in-bay functional test was the only
other in-orbit retry before these. Analysis is on-going.

The absolute VCS temperature is now 98.74 degK, implying a return to its
value prior to the last dewar heater anomaly (See notees from 26 Mar.).
Detector temperatures remain unchanged at 60.79 degK.

	- Science Status - Rodger Thompson reported that the preliminary views of
the Camera 1 fine alignment data, resulting from 7042 visit 1, look good with
an unchanged focus position and good images. Data and analysis of Cameras 2 &
3 are forthcoming today. (Per prior agreement with Project, results will be
emailed, possibly in two separate messages, as soon as they are available.)
Because of the rise in N2 ice temperature since intermediate alignment, we
can expect a little more C3 motion. The 7054 results indicating low IR
backgrounds are encouraging, but Rodger prefers to wait until the later
SMOV photometric tests for validation. For cameras 1 and 2, the bottom line
	is "we couldn't be happier."

4. STIS Status

	- Engineering Status - Nominal.

	- Science Status - Nominal. The first ERO occurs tomorrow morning, and the
second one late Monday night. In between is the second interation of the
target acq test (7067) on Sunday night.

5. FGS status - See new activities.

6. FOC/COSTAR status- no new activity.

PLANNING REPORTS

1. Status of Upcoming SMSs

   	- SMS083 - Currently executing.

 		 - This SMS implements the SSR for engineering
data record. This SMS also has been modified
to include the Target of Opportunity
 		   identified lst week.

		 - The first STIS CCD ERO is in this SMS.

	- SMS090 - Final Mode products out for review and require only
		   NICMOS sign-off.

		 - The first NICMOS EROs are in this SMS.

	- SMS097 - Initial Mode products are out for review.

		 - This calendar also will include
		   additional focus monitoring activities.

	- SMS104 - Has been built. SARs will be out for negotiation over the
		   week-end.

		 - Will require a "10.2 commanding update for
NICMOS SAA avoidance and for STIS CCD
annealing process. This update is on
schedule. The annealing proposal (7107) can
 		   go in this SMS.

	- SMS111 - The current plan is to include the MAMA turn-on
		   (7105 revised) in this SMS.

2. Replans

	STIS

	- MAMA HV Turn-on (7105) is delayed (from 21 March)
indefinitely. (Current plan is for SMS111) Affects on
downstream MAMA scheduling will be assessed.

	NICMOS

	- No significant replans have yet identified.

OPERATIONS STATUS

1. OPUS - Data from 7054 was scrambled by OPUS because observations were split
across memory dumps and each was pachaged separately by DDF. If DDF then
sends the packages out of time order, OPUS concatenates them out of order.
Also a problem if each memory dump is split across SSR recordings. OPUS and
Ray Kutina are working with DDF on possible work-arounds or operational
changes. Meanwhile, data is being FTP's to the users whenever necessary,
and the NICMOS team expressed their gratitude to OPUS' responsiveness.

2. Archive - Nominal.
